i have 3, my buddy noel has 2 and our other friend jesse has 2. solid reels, the maintenance you will more then likely end up doing yourself via alan tani's tutorials, or you can send them to him or straight to avet. any parts you need for the reels you get from avet. i believe scott throop is working repairs now at avet. biggest thing is to grease the drags to prevent saltwater intrusion which will happen. my avets are my specialty reels, my work horse reels are my tiagras.

I love my Avets. The drag.. when modified... is friggin scary. I dropped my plate down a notch and a 300lb marlin couldn't take 30 yards of line. I had to back off the preset to almost bait settings just to have a 40lb Ono take line.... 10 yards at the most still. Oh I run 130 Momoi diamond which is vicious.

In other words... Avet is awesome if you do minor work on it first. Out of the box the Tiagras are king. Penn V's are fine products if you take good care of them.

Russ,
I've seriously considered getting an AVET or 2, spooled with power pro/Jerry Brown with the agressive drag angle hard to argue what it could do. BUT I still have my 4 tiagra 50wlrs from 1996 (have added others since) as my work horses; riggers and corners, hard to argue the staying power. Again good luck with your quest.

Wow, i wasnt impressed with the avets.. THOUGHT THEY WERE SLOPPY, SPOOL WASNT BALANCED, drag wasn't smooth. I went with a shimano tyrnos20 and a shimano trinidad 30. Love em both to death!!!
Can give the spool a spin.. and it will spin for days... sooooooooo smooth!

ever look inside of those reels? have you seen the ones with the glue on drag washers? haters? wait till you gotta service them. glue on drags? what a drag! any repairs to a glued on drag gotta go to avet, or a machine shop to machine it off down to the glue, dont think the machinest gonna want to ruin his cutter with all that glue avet changes reels more often then most of you change your underware.

I also heard that they glue on their drag for certain models.

Uhhhh as for glue on drags.... don't shimano/Penn... we're talking about trolling models not the smaller ones... have the fiber glued on to the assembly on both sides of the metal washer? Same principle of holding the pads in place. Glue doesn't hurt the performance. If it is glued all over the place and on the front of the pad then yes.. it sucks. But Avet will correct the problem instantly. I have taken apart tons of trolling reels just for the hell of it. The Avet is a solidly built and simple reel to take apart. Shimano is a nightmare with springs here and there and plastic parts all over. But can't diss Shimano because they still work.

My take on this since I have all 3. Shimano=reliable, loud clicker, straight out of the box fishability.
Penn V=some problems, inconsistent drag, hate the plastic shift button.
Avet=Cranking power, amazing..if greased... drag. Beautiful silver and blue. 50's have loud clicker. 80's are not so loud. Easy to disassemble.

My work horse reels are my Avets...50's and 80's. My hard headed old school dad has Penn's since the 80's still working. He dislikes shimano because hard to fix. And now he loves using all my Avets. He says they are...Powerful and can take a beating.

Russ... thread jack... there's a guy on CG with a newer design 19 AK with extension and a zuke. Shoot an offer or trade for smaller boat. I'm tempted. Well maybe.
