Just talked to Jeff Kahl today - the Halloween Shootout is on - Halloween Saturday. Jeff is the owner and captain of a beautiful, fast 43 Bertram Piper. I've been doing the tournament every year since it started - this year is the 8th annual. They have a real high pay-out ratio, and, it's basically biggest fish over 100 lbs. The first year, only 20-something boats did it, and no one caught a qualifying fish. Every year after that, there have been 50+ boats, w/first place paying around $50k. Rules are
modified igfa - Ok to not have a chair, and hand lining in front of the reel (not the rod tip) is Ok (
www.bluemarlinshootout.com - website does not show every year, but it has been on every year).
Downside - you have to make the trek to Lahaina and party on Haloween

. It is a real good time, and every year see lots of Oahu boats over there - we actually have a pretty good batting average over there overall. The side bets are fun - they are for 2nd place in the tournament. If you don't play in them, 2nd place wins free entry for the next year's shootout. Lookout for fliers in the next few weeks, and get ready!
