I think Russ was looking more into the trolling ones not the smaller toys.

As for glued to spool. Yes you have to send the spool back. But they replace it for you for a small fee. So much easier to have them do it anyways. Send reel back and in a week and a half... new drag. Hell they even serviced the reel for free. But they do not warranty greased drags.

Here's a pic of my workhorses.Click the image to open in full size.Click the image to open in full size.
Notice the stock length of the handle. The gears are larger than shimano's. The greased drag with a dropped plate has almost too much drag at "low preset" settings in the bait lever position. Where you see the lever now is how I run for Ono. The last 40lber took 10 yards max.

Try one out. If not.. i'll buy it since my dad wants another 80 Avet.

If we are talking about Avets PRO 30N, PRO 30 and on up then it is a whole new ball game. From right out of the Box they will out perform most every reel on the market and there are some excellent reel manufactures. What the problem is, their is such a personal dislike for other reel manufactures and it is obvious in the way they state their opinions. All of the reels in this class are pretty much all machined aluiminum frame and sideplates. Variations on assembly, numbers of parts, gearing, shifting anodizing is to be expected. That also affects the reels performance and maintance procedures. I have used all of them in the past and found for me Avets fit my needs better than Accurate, Shimano, Diawa and Penns. It does not mean they are inferior or bad products because they are not.....they are all quality products. For ease of maintance, good quality customer service, sleek and pretty much bullet proof I have chosen the Avets. I have nearly 200 reels of all makes and models but my last 38 purchases have been Avets for my friends, family and employees and have yet to have a single problem. 99% of all reel problems are poor maintance and operator error. The reels fails 1% of the time due to improper assembly and bad parts. Urban myths are just created by those who do not understand what they have in their hands...Read the directions...its that simple. Just one mans opinion and thats all it is.

i am a hardcore shimano tiagra fan....i am a tiagra service guy on kauai and will not touch other reels (penn,daiwa,avet)...the tiagra is a proven reel and very easy to rebuild...they do need to be pre greased (screws)...once they are greased, they will always come apart easily...some of my commercial tuna fisherman friends use them and the reels go thru hell...no real cleaning and are on the gunnel pretty much all day every day...the outer most spool bearing does go out occasionally sisnce saltwater gets driven in by rough seas and heavy spray...the drags are pretty much bullet proof and i never needed to replace any...except for reels that were thrown off the boat to prevent getting spooled while attached to another rod and reel....dont do this....its only a fish.....lol.....i am sure that the avets are great reels but i dont know where to get parts...if you get shimanos...just call me for parts....I got most of everything in my garage....just my .02 cents....aloha....and also....DO NOT BUY THE EBAY REELS THAT ARE SAID TO BE SHIMANO TIAGRA EQUIVALENTS...THEY ARE CRAP !!!!...thanks

My dad went to the buoy to palu ahi. Decided to troll back for a short 3 mile run in the Ono lane. Double strike. Both on the Avet 50's. 40lber took 5 yards and took less than a few minutes to come in. The other one one was in its teens. No drag taken and in the boat a few minutes after that. This is what he told me an hour ago.. "Boy.. your Avets mean da drag. Set'em to strike and the 40 pounder came flying out of da water.. Mean."

I have Penn and Avet reels, fish with Mikes Shimanos... All Great reels. The Avets are definatley a great reel... I have 2 LX 2 speed spooled with 60 LB JB Spectra with a 60 LB topshot I have baited everything to Mahi, Shibi, and even an accidental Marlin (the hook straightened due to locking down the drag) The reel always is flawless. Can cast an Opelu long with no issues.... Love them. As far as the workhorses...The bigger models like the T Rex are sick (quad drags). A little maintainence and you are solid.
