Re: Monache Meadows and my first fish on the fly

great photo's. i went up to monache for the first time last summer, and we camped at the campground where you cross the stream in the middle of the campground (i forget the name). i was pissed i forgot my camera, that area is beautiful. i walked way up the stream alone late in the afternoon and caught countless browns and goldens on dry flies. then walking back as it got dark in the moonlight i must have come across 3 or 4 groups of deer heading down to the stream. it is just awesome up there. thanks for the report!

Great job on the fly work. I still don't have a golden under the belt yet. I am on way up to the Estern Sierra's (Saddle Bag Lake) to see if I can get a few. NICE POST and PICS

Re: Monache Meadows and my first fish on the fly

Seems like I stand corrected..

BUT I generally don’t fish north of LA BAY in Baja, and in mainland MX have never fished anywhere north of San Carlos. In fact in most of the places in Baja, the locals show you where the fish are…. And they always seem happy to help me find fish.

I have never had a Mexican fishing boat move in on my fishing, shut it down or anything like that. THEY are always there to get fish, but to them there is no advantage to shutting down the bite. In many cases, I will offer some of my fish to the local guys, and they always smile.

Many years ago, I discovered that the Mexican fishing guys were there to make a living, not like us who fish for sport. Their lives depend on the catch. I always give some (if not all) of my catch to the guys who are working the local areas. Many times I will fish within 10 feet of their boat, and have them gaff the fish directly from my line, they always return the favors……. Think about it… Be an asshole, you will be treated like one….

Now in the US it is much different….. Most of the small fishing boats are guys who are spending $$$ hoping to pacify the wife by bringing home the FOOD.. if not then the wifie complains about the cost of the fishing…. Not being married, I don’t have this problem. I go fishing and spend the $$$ to have FUN, not to fill my freezer….

IF anyone here calculated the cost of the fish they bring home, they will discover that it is MUCH cheaper to eat at the BEST restaurant and order the most expensive meal, then to go either hunting or fishing.

As to the Dirt bike crowd. MOST of the good old days are gone.. the few assholes have ruined it for the rest. When you go to the desert, look around, you will see off-road-ers parked all over the place. LOUD noises and plenty of empty beer cans…the last time I went to the area near Kennedy Meadows. The wrong type of off-road-ers had found the place. LOTS of assholes riding anywhere they wanted and lots of beer and loud music. Now it might only take a few, but it ruins it for all of us… JUST like the ASSHOLES fishing in SO-CA now…it will not be long when you are not having any fun fishing…then what???

Do you want to edit that to say you've never had a Mexican sportboat move in your fishing???

It seems that just about every trip was interrupted by Mexican purse seiners.

And the never ending stream of weekend warriors on thumpers and quads, many of whom won't stay on the marked trails and are generally tearing shit up!

And before you start up with your "environmentalist, tree hugger" BS, I hunt, fish, and camp up there!

Do you have any idea how much fun it is to have a group on dirt bikes ride right up to a spring or water hole that you've been watching at bow range since an hour before first light?! I DO!
Stuff like this really does suck and it only takes a few assholes to mess it up for everyone else, fishing, biking, 4x4ing, whatever the sport there is always some shithead(s) with total disregard for the rules.

Re: Monache Meadows and my first fish on the fly

Well the first mistake a person could make is qrouping idiots riding quads in closed areas with Motorcycle riders riding on legal trails....

Hunting anywhere near legal motorcycle trails would be a blow it as well.

I would like to think fisherman and riders could co-exist, especially because I am both.

As a matter of fact I will use my bike to get me back into Monache here in a couple of weeks to fish, I ride up there several times a year but dont usually fish next ime I will.

Heres a small Golden caught and released in the KM area, not in the Kern, but close by.

Fishing and dirt biking are two of my favorite things in life, I could never give one up for the other.

and BTW- What the fuck is wrong with beer and music?? Get over yourself.

OK,, I never have run into the "Mexican purse seiners".

You will have to understand that in MEXICO, we are guests........ and should act accordinly.

I have seen the "counts" for the San Diego sport boats, and I also have seen the "catches" on the boats.. Hardly any San Diego follows the MEXICAN fishing rules..... and you all know that............ If PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, the sport boats and private fishing boats can be eliminated from Mexican waters... after all how much money do you provide to support the Mexican economy when you depart from San Diego and never touch the shore. I am willing to bet that in the near future, you will not be allowed to fish Mexico without stopping in Ensenada first..... how would you like that. Mark the calendar, it is not that far away, the Mexican fishing industry is making lots of noise about the pressure applied by the San Diego fleet.........
