Back from Monthly trip to Montana

Just back from Mazoula and Twin Bridges. Fishing the first day at Rock Creek and it was smokin. Bugmeisters were kicking up a storm. My pard and I released way over 100 fish on Dries.
Next day fished a small section of the Clark Fork for a couple of hours after doing chores at my buddies ranch. Fished ok but not off the hook. Golden stones and once again the Bugmeisters.
Went to Healing Waters in Twin Bridges which is my home away from home. Since I only fish dries fishing was a bit tougher the first day as we fished the Lower Beaver Head. Still it was an excellent day with about 10 quality fish.
Second Day on my favorite river though not my favorite section of the Big Hole as I prefer the upper section but we fished the middle section. Smokin hot fishing again on Golden Stones as well as Black Magics, Pmd's and Caddis. Funny thing was the fish were away from the bank at least on this day. Fished the inside foam lines. Weather was from pouring rain to sunny skies.
Third day back at the lower Beaverhead to prove it can produce more quality fish on dries and I wasnt disappointed. 80 degrees and sunshine didnt keep the fish away and I stripped down and got tanned.
Next day heard the Salmon flies were starting to happen on the Madison so off we went and sure enough there were Stones and some Salmon flies. Put on a dark size 4 and went to work. The bite was good as we could fish the smaller side channels and the fish we did rise were huge and attacked like advertised. Again, No clouds and too much sun but Oh well I just had to deal with it.
As a note:Healing Waters Lodge is the finest place I have been and I have traveled all over the world. Although the food is 5 star as Peter is a Culinary Institute Wizard, you can arrange to stay out later on the river and they will keep your dinner warm. Hors Dourves at 7:15 with wine and cocktails and dinner at 8 all overlooking the lake where noses are comming up until it gets very dark. I fish the lake every night just for fun after dinner and it is a blast. Chris got a 26.5 incher out of there this year and they are growing fast. Yes it is expensive but here you truely get what you pay for and more as customer service here is 24/7. If you are looking for hard beds and hot dogs and hamburgers this is probably not the place for you but if Wild Boar, Pheasant, Filet Mignon served with dishes I cant spell are your cup of tea, sheets changed every day with unlimited supplies of coffee and snacks in your room, centrally located to fish many many rivers and streams, then this is the place for you. They also own 2 miles of the Ruby and spent a fortune stoneing the entire stretch. Also they have licenses for More private waters including sections of the Boulder.
I fished the lake before my flight and home I came. I will be back up to Montana in a couple of weeks. I already miss it.

Re: Back from Monthly trip to Montana

Hey Sage,

Deffinately some waters are higher and cloudier than others. In Missoula, Rock Creek is deffinately the place though Floating is done at the end of June. Give the others a couple of weeks and life should be good all over that area.
The Ruby is still unfishable and should be good in about 3 - 4 weeks. The Beaverhead, Madison and Big Hole are fishing well and getting better. Of course the more clouds the better but fishing is still very good.
Because of the snowfall September should be off the hook this year.... Finally.... All the streams should be set for phenominal fishing. Except for it being a holiday you should be living large.
Best of luick on your trip. I will be up there sometime in Sept but I will wait and decide at the last minute.

See you at the shop Bill

Re: Back from Monthly trip to Montana

Cool Jamie, I know over in the Swan Valley the water level is still too high, which (like you said) means Sept should be a blast. Can't wait, i love the early fall up there when there is still a fair amount of water. In an effort to avoid the crowds we may also try some of the upper lakes in the Bob Marshall range if the weather allows.

Re: Back from Monthly trip to Montana

Hey Shelly,

Yup, my favorite too. I flyfish Montana every month. I am back in Missoula starting Saturday and it sounds like everything is fishing great. I will probably be back at Healing waters in Twin Bridges in late August or Sept. but I start Long Ranging in Sept. as well. Its just a shame that sometimes work gets in the way of my fishing.
