The Search For SD Steelhead...

continues......
Shelly and I traveled into the backcountry of San Diego county in search of the elusive wild trout along the banks of "charred tree creek" today. What we found was bugs, plenty of water, but no sign of fish.
After driveing an hour on the freeway, thirty minutes of winding roads and ten miles of dirt roads we made it to the trailhead. Once out of the truck and into the hiking mode, we made our first sighting of the day......

The day was a success. That being the first time for either of us seeing the first California turkeys of our lives.
Then alittle further down the trail, we looked to the north and saw this magnificint waterfall. The highest in SD county, reported by one of the books on SD trail hiking.

Two and a half miles in, down a good trail(FBW-peachs and cream), along side the main river and then a branch off to the creek we were seeking. Starting at another waterfall, about fifty feet high,

we encountered this after looking over the edge.

So we decided to start fishing above the falls, working our way upstream.

The water temperature was favorable for fish as Shelly can attest to, by several foot dunkings,

So, on and on we went, bouldering, rock hopping, sweating, and sometimes cursing. The kind of going where you have to put the rod down and pull yourself up the rock or rocks, turn around and help the other person up. After two and a half miles of this Shelly was beginning to wonder, out loud, if we were lost. No I assured her, we weren't lost the road should just be around the next bend and if worse comes to worse we just go back out the way we came in . Well the next couple of bends didn't produce , now its the quite treatment :Kick_emot .
So, eventually, it all worked out, we found the road(a little further on that what was written) we made it home, and now looking back on it, know that we had an excellent day of hiking and finding the unseen San Diego.
Until next time,

That sounds like one heck of an adventure. Who cares if you didn't catch anything. Just getting away from the rat race is worth all the effort.

Yes it was. That was a little surprise when we looked over the edge of that waterfall though. The rest of the day was spent without seeing another soul.

Looks like a bunch of 95%rs to me.

Haven't heard of any Steelies below San Mateo, although I'm sure they were down here at one time.

A cool place for that type of adventure is the stream that comes down from Mt. Baldy (I think it's off the 10 FWY and Mountain in Upland). Stocked by DFG but a lot of rumors over the years of brookies and resident browns.

I did real well on the stocked trout with roostertails and 2 lb. But you gotta sneak up on 'em.

Re: The Search For SD Steelhead...

The steelhead comment is sort of my dry humor showing though. If there are any wild trout in those mountains, they just have the genitic remnants of steelhead. Back before they built all the dams here is SD there was a run of steelies.

Re: The Search For SD Steelhead...

The cussing was from me..

You know Bruce is being way too nice with his report...
This was the hardest day in my life that I can remember ever going thru...
I was expecting a day like fishing Jake's area... that was easy those boulders were managable...
TODAY... I should have had a clue when Bruce
said "Come on we got to get going...it's serious up ahead"

There was a series of boulders that have a face on them at least ten feet tall.
He had to help me on a few boulders and on big one I missed him and slid way back down both of my leggs are black and blue...
They never ended... Thank goodness I was wearing my levi's I had falling down a number of times, slipped off a few rocks, Thru bushes... ETC...
I know I would have torn some holes in anything else.

I have always been able to keep up in the man's world of fishing until today...
This is what I learned today...I learn something everytime I attempt to fish...
Trying to fish can be Humbling and it is time to hit the gym -
I promise to never smoke again- I swear this time- The burning acid feeling in my lungs is not fun when trying to hike...I could not hang...
One more thing...
My boyfriend is a verrrrrry patient man... I was a pain in the butt today -

I wish I was at Crowley...

Thanks for the great pics and story.

Shelley, if you just keep following that stream you won't need to hit the gym. What a fun day!
