Truckee River

I'm going up to Tahoe for a week and heard the Truckee river had some gnarly flyfishing. Anyone have any tips on places to go up there. It'll be my first time in the area.

Try looking at the Reno fly shop web page, they have a fish report and guide service that fish that area. For Lake Tahoe, try "Sierra Fin Addicts", Gerald Scholl who works part time on the American Angler.

Good Luck!

Try the "little truckee river". Prime fly fishing.

Most of the area upstream from the town of Truckee is road-side fishing and only good in the morning due to traffic and heat...this section is bait/lures/anything goes. Downstream of town are plenty of great places but some/most have restrictions (i.e. 0 limit, flies only, etc.) unless you get deep into the canyon towards the NV state line where you'll have to hike since there aren't many roads. I was just up a few weeks ago and the warmer weather makes daytime angling tough plus there's a lot of river rafters.

Not sure the current status of the kokanee, but if they're starting to run then it's always fun to catch some land-locked salmon on a fly-rod. It takes a little bit of 4x4 but the inlet of the upper little truckee into Stampede was a great place when I was in college and wanted some high-flying challenges with a fly-rod...there something about a jumping 24" fish in 3' of water that makes me keep that 2 weight around.

Try Truckee Mountain Hardware when you get in town for some tips, or look them up on the web as they occasionally update their fishing report...the Reno Fly shop updates are pretty generic these days but still useful if you need general info about hatches.

Good luck and have fun...

Truckee

The most recent issue of Flyfisherman has a good article on the river that is worth reading..It will tell you everything you need to know..Don't be afraid to throw some big streamers at first/last light...Some major hogs in that river...

If its your first time up there I wouldnt recommend the Truckee unless you get a guide. There is just way to much water to know where to go!

If you choose not to hire a guide go to the little truckee, much smaller water and I bet you will catch some fish.... Drive all the way up pass boca resivor and head towards stampede resivor, park in the last pull out before the dam, work down from there.... there are some nice holes.
