Mammoth/June/Twin Lakes Area Flyfishing

Hey All,

So I'm headed out next week to camp at Twin Lakes and was thinking of doing some fly fishing. I've done it once before in Alaska and remember the technique.

I was thinking of buying a cheap-o starter setup (5 weight, around 8ft. long) from Bass Pro Shops (around 50-75). Yeah, I know you get what you pay for but it'll work right? Plus renting costs $40/day...

I have the cash to hire a guide, but I'd really prefer not to spend it. If I ask around, do you think I'll be able to do well on my own?

Any and all advice would be much appreciated! Also, if anyone knows a guide that's a little less expensive (or who I could bribe with some WSB) I'd like to hear about it.

- Dave

PM TWreports and ask for a BD rate. He offered up a good eal the last time I was heading up. Also, we'll be there on the 13-16th if you want to hook up.

Thanks Curtis, I'll do that. I'm actually going up Monday-Wednesday (just after you'll have left - though I'd go midweek to beat the crowds).

If you're doing some trout fishing up there and a certain area is really going off, let me know via PM if you get the chance, unless of course you go to a "secret spot".

ive fished that area before... fish dry flys a but. never under estimate parachute adams or elk hair caddis flys. caught too many fish to count in the eastern sierras on those two alone... its a little late in the season for mosquitoes i think. but you could toss em out there a little. ive never learned how to nymph fish as well, but i know that if you got a wolley bugger, they can sometimes put FAT brown trout out of twin lakes on those... im talkin like 9 lb brown trout. natives with the teeth!
