First Rod and Reel

Hey guys,
I have been really wanting to get get into flyfishing, have finally decided to buy the tackle. I am looking to buy a rod and reel combo that is decently cheep.

I will be fishing for trout in the 1-4lb range. I will be mostly fishing in the eastern sierras and big bear.

I saw thisBass Pro Shops Outdoors Online: Offering the best in Fishing, Hunting and Outdoor Products
and thought it looked decent.

What would the best weight and length be for me, given my circumstances? And also, what do you guys recommend I get?

-Thanks.

Get yourself a 9', 4 piece 9wt. Reels don't matter much with trout as they really just hold the line. For a better quality rod look at the Albright's or TFO. TFO offers excellent stuff at a moderate price, but with a $25 lifetime replacement guarantee for breakage.

Albright Fishing Products - Fly Fishing, Fly Rods, Fly Reels, Fly Spools, Fly Lines, Waders, Boots, & Conventional Rods

Temple Fork Outfitters Fly Rods

You will not be disappointed with either rods and reels by both Albright and TFO.

I like a 3 to 4 weight for lakes and ponds, and a 6 weight for small rivers. As far as reels go, look for a reel with good drag. I like Lamson reels. Not super cheap, but really good reels. Look at Cabelas for rods and reels, too.

Steve - A 9 wt is too much for Sierra trout! A 4 wt will be nice, but might be too light for lake use in a wind, especially in inexperienced hands. A 5 wt would be great, and a six would be useful but might also be too much. A 9ft TFO pro 4wt and a decent reel uplined with a 5wt line (or a 5wt with a 5wt line or even uplined with a 6wt line) would be a great starter outfit for not much coin! My kids use the 5wt Pro with a six weight line and love it!

You're right. It's a mind set typo.

My fly fishing ranges from spring creeks to saltwater big game and everything in between. Been fishing the 9wt quite a bit of late on the saltwater. I meant to say a 5wt, which is probably the best all around rod for lakes and streams. It's my go to. I also have a 3wt, 4wt, 6wt and 7wt, but my general go to rod is the 5wt. Probably because I don't have reels with proper line for all of them.

Sorry about that. The TFO and Albright recommendations are still the same.
