Dru, night crawlers on split shots is meat fishing: presenting meat to catch meat. If you want to truly experience the force that is fly fishing, you need resist the darkside that is meat fishing. Resist the temptation and embrace fly fishing. Once you've completed the move, you will out produce any meat fisherman.

Read my report (post #7) on the Owyhee and you will understand where nymph fishing stands in the heirarchy of fly fishing for trout:

http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/fr...080-big-o.html (The Big O)

I am not going to dissuade you from nymphing. On some rivers, that's all that works and you've got to start somewhere. We've all nymphed and still do. But please resist the dark side. May the force be with you.

"Guy" the Dude that ownes the fly shop in Kernville has a good site (saw a link to it already) with current reports. These are tight lipped catch & release fly guys posting here, but you can probably pick up some info Kern River Fly Fishing Forum - Kern River Fly Fishing Reports

Here's his report on your stretch of River from a couple of days ago...

The 20 mile roadside section of the upper Kern Top water action as of today is excellent. If you are into dry fly action, now is the time. The upper river is starting to come down and the fishing is starting to turn on. Skilled anglers are picking up fish along the edges , in seams or shallow water . The river is clear as of today and is flowing around 965 cfs and dropping . Its still big water.

The higher in the river you go, usually the better in terms of getting away from the crowds of people there to drink and swim in the holes. I like fishing about 1 mile below McNally's (you have to eat there when you are there) above the crowded camp sites. Pull your vehicle over when you can and walk the banks and you will find hole after hole of fishable water. The brush on the banks doesn't make it easy to cast a fly, so getting wet will get you to more fishable areas. Good luck and bring lots of drinks.....it will be warm.
