Anyone know if this Los Angeles spot is worth visiting? I'm looking for some local spots besides the sierras for a little trout action. I heard the place can be pretty dumpy.
Ummm... No comment... If you have the patience to call the Sport Chalet in Santa Clarita, talk to Cody in the fishing dept.. He'll give you the skinny on the local freshwater scene... I am not a freshwater fisherman but I would try Castaic or Pyramid long long LONG before Piru... I don't honestly have a clue how the fishing is however...
If your talking the creek above Piru access is blocked by car and foot but is reachable by boat, 10 years plus they closed the Blue Point campgrounds which in turn shut down foot traffic to the area and access to the creek. Endagered species act (butterfly or something). Like mentioned above when your that close to the city you get tons of people but in the 20 years+ I have visitied the area I have never had an issue. I've trolled where the creek reaches the lake and have had success on the dink trout. I have always had better luck on the bass here.
Not Piru, but I used to hike into the W. Fork of the San Gabriel River and fly fish for small trout. The DFG used to stock the river above the highway bridge, and there was always a ton of people there, so I would walk in about an hour and fish.

I have not been there in many years, but if fishing is still permitted, I imagine you can find trout without having to take the long drive up 395.
If you're talking about accessing from Frenchman's flat. It can be a bit crowded and trashy on the weekends (diapers and crap in the water). If you walk downstream for a couple of hours and fish up the fishing can be pretty good. I haven't been there in a few years so thinkgs may have changed. I would recommend a sidearm. Gang bangers have tagged the rocks downstream for a ways and you could run into bears in pretty tight quarters.
Wow.............grew up fishing Piru with my dad, back in the 60's and early 70's.
One of the best trout fishing days of my life was when Piru overflowed, and we hiked into the spillway and fished the pond and stream created at the bottom of the dam.
Fuckin nice memory right there.
Couldn't get me back in that area now even if ya offered Tila Tequila naked on a party boat..........
