Hot Creek in the Eastern Sierra

I arrived at Hot Creek today, about 15 minutes from Mammoth Lakes, around 1 pm. The BWO's were coming off. I tied on two different types of Beatis patterns one being Sloan's Mighty May in size 20 and I tied on a smaller micro may pattern size 22. I fished indicator less with a size 6 shot and a 4 wt rod. The fishing today was just about as good as it gets for both numbers and size. There were a few fish rising to the blue wing olives but must were eating the emergers and nymphs. Right from the start the fishing was great hooking probably around 5 fish in the first 20 minutes of fishing. My buddy that was with me hooked 4 fish in about 9 casts while I was rigging up. I landed around 10 fish and probably hooked another 20 to 25 in the 2 and half hours I fished. There was a lot of angler pressure today but every slot in the river system seemed to hold fish. I talked to about every fly fishing angler I walked by today and most were from out of town and were fishing generic attractor patterns and were still hooking fish. If you want to beat the crowds of the opener and still have great fishing come up withen the next two weeks before the 25 of April.

Call me pinchi, but I would rather fish size 20 to 26 nymphs with an indicator than fish dry flys--just luv to see that indicator twitch, and go under/sideways.

Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the report. A friend and I were up there several weeks ago and the fishing was excellent!

hey no problem guys
The fishing today though was even better it was totally off the hook. The only way it could have gotten any better is if the fish walked on shore an hooked them selves
