Took my boy Trevor to fish the Lake Poway Kids Fishing Derby. This was his third year. The first year, he was on the board until the last couple fish were weighed. He got bumped off by a few ounces. Man was he bummed. I told him there was always next year. The second year he only caught two tiny trout. Not his year. This year he was detemined to get on the board. We were up at 3am and at the lake in line by 4am. After the gates opened, we drove in, parked, then literally ran to the concession stand to get in line to get a boat. There must have been a hundered people trying to get one of the 40 boats. We were quick enough and got a boat. Hit the water a few minutes later to find the trout hungry. He ended up with four trout between 7am and 8am with one that I thought he might have a chance at placing. No more fish until 11:30 for his 5th fish. Another good one. With a limit, we raced in to get weighed. For his age bracked, the current first place was 4.43lbs, second was 4.35lbs, and third was 4.24lbs. That was until they weighed Trevors fish. His largest went 4.30lbs putting him in third. After what seemed like an eternity waiting and watching all the other kids weigh there catches, the last fish is weighed and Trev's fish hold up. THIRD PLACE! After a lot of WOO HOO's, high fives, and knuckles they call his name to come down and collect his award. He got a new fishing pole, tackle bag LOADED with tackle, free 1/2 day fishing trip, free adult permit and boat rental at Lake Poway, a couple hats, and the most important trophy. Talk about one happy kid.
