Great Thread. Maybe too good. I read about my secret lure. Uhh...Damn Hustlur. I am gonna be watching you on Sunday at the Irvine Lake Throwdown.
For creeks and streams anywhere a split shot pinched on 12 to 24 inches above a salmon egg on a salmon egg hook. Is all you really need.
4 pound test p-line.
Small roostertails, meps, kastmasters, and super dupers, all kick ass in the biggest creeks, and small to medium rivers, and lakes. Work the lure in the current carefully and it is game on. Feeling the hit , and the jumps that often follow is the pinnacle of california spinning reel fishing. Especially when they are native fish full of color and fight. Last time at a chain of hike in lake just out of the June Lake Loop, we caught and released countless brook, rainbow, and a few nice browns. Some made it to the campfire and after eating hike in trout, I will never eat trout from a restaurant again. Local Stockers leave alot to be desired on the dinner table. It is a good thing the local stockers make up for it in size.
If my lures are not working due to skittish or non-feeding fish, I go to the clear float bobber split shotted 2' to 8' a fly almost never lets me down. All you need is about a half dozen ot less flys to match the hatch.
I prefer the lures and mini jigging. I put this type of ( Float Fly ) fishing one step above baitfishing as far as excitement goes. To each his own. Looking forward to the sierra opener. Tight Lines !
