So I have lived in Socal for 14 years and have yet to catch a single bass, that's right not one. I got to bait two Swordfish last year, but can't seem to catch a bass
Today I fished Miramar aroudn noon. Yeah, it was hot but I had some time. Rigged on #8 Floro line, a drop shot with a 5" worm 14" above the weight. Made 4 cast, snagged on bottom, lost rig. Moved to another area. 1st cast, snagged on bottom, lost rig. One last rig, moved a little east, 20 casts, no bites. Last cast spinning reel gets huge tangle, I get super pissed rip it all to shit and head home. Did I mention I hate spinning gear as well?
I cast it out, let it hit the bottom, jiggle rod tip for 20 sec or so, move lure, do over until I reel it all the way in.
Is this right? I read a lot online about it, but have no way of telling if that's the correct way until I catch something.
Is there any easier lake to start out at around SD? Boat or shore is fine.
It's frustrating to say the least, growing up in Florida, I have 25+ years of bass fishin under my belt, and back home I could always catch fish.
Maybe I should just stick to Saltwater and trout fishing.
Anyhow, had to get that out...

I have never fished any lakes in sd so i can't recommend a lake.
Have you tried burrying the hook tip back in the plastic, so it won't snag on anything?
Try a drop shot rig and hook a plastic worm in the neck area, green and red works well for me.

Topwater @ Loveland now. Go to Loveland and throw a Zara Spook or some other topwater jig.Prop baits like a Devil's Horse kick ass there. Watch for boils early on. Grey light til 8 or so.
Or you could go the shiner route. 2' under a stick bobber and lob it out. Schwoomp, bobber goes under with bass attached.
Some guys do well w/dropshot there.
It gets REAL HOT walking back up from the lake, but worth it. Take lots of water.

First light and right before dark are best. Weekends the lakes get beat to a froth. Try flylining crawlers, you should get some results. Boats are nice but you can still catch em from shore.
I like using Rapala type lures.
Midday is a tough sell for local bass.

MIRAMAR'S TOUGH. SPECIFIC SPOTS WORK ONLY BECAUSE OF EXTREME WATER CLARITY, AND THE MASSIVE TULEY LINE LEAVES TOO MANY HOMES FOR A LOT OF BASS DURING WARMER MONTHS. THE EASIEST AND BIGGEST BASS CAN BE CAUGHT AT THE LAKES DEEPER DEPTHS YEAR ROUND, STARTING AT '30. ALL OF YOUR FAVORITE BAITS WORK, JUST NEED TO METER THEM OR KNOW HANGOUTS. MOE'S HOLE,THE BIG CONCRETE INLET, AND ALL OF THE POINTS HOLD BASS. A LOT OF MAN MADE STRUCTURE LIKE SUNKEN BOATS, HANGING CRATES, AND CONCRETE CHUNKS ARE PLACED PRECARIOUSLY. SENKOS, DROP SHOT, AND TEXAS ROBOS KILL EM WHEN YOU FIND THEM.
YOUR TEQNIQUE WORKS, JUST NEED TO PUT IT IN FROM OF THEM.

Thanks for the help.

Obviously don't know what all you're doing but I'd almost bet you're fishing too heavy line. I've found that 8 lb Maxima ultra-green or P-Line works best for me. If you really want to catch a bass, put a shiner on a little-bitty shiner hook (nose hooked), attach a split-shot a couple feet up the line and let your boat drift around on the lakes. Drag the shiner behind you about 50-75' and it'll get bit soon enough. Good luck on Miramar...you picked the toughest lake in the county!

I'll try some shiners soon, that sounds like a good time.
Thanks for the lake info, that does make me feel much better |

A buddy had an honest 50 fish day two weeks ago at Henshaw. They nit everything but topwaters with spinnerbaits being the top producer. Said the fish averaged 3 lbs with a top of 4 lbs, all fishing from shore. Go get 'em.
