Re: Catfish

I dont know if the catfishin you do will translate into catfishin at lake Mead in Nevada, but what type of terrain and techniques would you catheads suggest I try to rip some cats at Mead?? Whole shrimp seems to works well at Mead, but not sure where to find them in numbers and good size fish. Fishing from shore in the past Ive caught them off points on Shrimp, BUT NOW im in a BOAT and havent caught but a few small bullheads. Looking for bigger fish 3-5# and BIGGER. Thanks guys. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Catfish

jason, down here in Ky, and I would say there in lake mead.

Bait fish / Bluegills / any type of small bream around 3''-5'' swimming on a slipfloat system would produce a biggen, Flatheads and Bluecats if they are there.along Rock flats with dropoffs to deeper water are #1. for the flathead at night with live bait.and wil also produce big Blues, with cut or live bait shallow or deep water..and sometimes big Channels will hit them also. But Cut Fillets of the same and Salmon fillets do well also.cut into 1 1/2''x 3/4''strip's hanging below the float. will kill'em ( Channels )if you find the fish Guaranteed.

Try soaking some of the shrimp or cut up chicken breast with some of your wifes purfume,No kidding, or some anis oil, or strawberrry koolaid.Channels tear it up if you find them ,Just change around your bait untill you find out what they are hitting and ware'em out.

Small bluegills about 1''-2 1/2 '' hooked thru the eyes then pinch'em in half using the head only or the whole little fish or mabe just the body any way you go , if you find the fish and try some of these you will catch bigger fish.

Good Luck the next time out and I hope this helps you out some.

Re: Catfish

Jason this is the setup and some of the rewards, using cut fillets of Salmon and Bluegill.

Re: Catfish

Sounds good I will give some of those a try. Can you describe the connection of your slip rig?? You indicator (bobber) had me scratching my head. Is the indicator fixed, or able to slip (slide) up and down the line allowing the bait to swim deeper??

Also, what depth of water do you suggest I try. For stripers Ive been anchoring in 50-70', caught a few dink cats, but would like to try a more productive area for cats.

Thanks very much for your help. Looks like you get lot a cats where your at. Nice.

Re: Catfish

Jason , No it is not fixed , it has a slipknot up the line above the float that you can slide either way.I tie my own , the rig goes from #4-7 Gamakatzu Octopus style tied to a 12-14'' 20-30lb leader connected to a #80lb barrel swivel then a plastic bead / 1/4 oz weight / bead / 1/4 oz weight / bead then 7-8'' weighted float / 1/4'' bead then 2 or 3 smaller beads then your slipknot, to set your depth. your ready man..., this will bring your float tip just about a 1-2'' above water level,( You can adjust your weight to get the desired height on the float tip ) that will give you a better time table to set the hook on hit.

If you see the float move downward or at a angle of more than 1'' your fish has moved with your bait 1-2'ft in 6-7'ft of water. and so on as you shallow up the fish has moved a shorter distance.. Hopes this helps .

Re: Catfish

I fish a fairly weedy lake and use a drop shot rig to keep the bait just above the weeds. A 2/0 hook on 10# line with a 1/4oz drop shot sinker works well. Biggest cat so far is 30#.
