Lake Barrett

I heard that Lake Barrett is going to be shut down for good. Is this true or is it a rumor going around. I havent had a chance to fish it yet but would like to hit it up If I get a chance.

Re: Lake Barrett

This time Jimmy has unfabricated info. All SD City lakes are in danger of closing. The new Water dept boss feels the lakes are for holding water not for recreation. The City is looking for a concessionaire to take over operation but the deal will be difficult to justify on the smaller lakes. The City took State funds that have many restrictions on the fees that can be charged, minimum reinvestment in the facilities, etc. Not to mention the City will want to make money off the poor bastard that gets the contract, gonna be tough to get somebody to take the deal. Even though they are losing money with their staff operating the facilities. San Vee is closing for the Dam project next year. Might be tough to fish fresh water fairly soon.

Re: Lake Barrett

This information is correct. Had a buddy fishing last Wed at Barrett and he spoke to Laurie and Bill who work the lake for the city and they were already notified by the city of the impending closure and the loss of their jobs.

Re: Lake Barrett

Not so much 50k to invest as 50k to loose. Too bad the arrangement with the Boating and Waterways dept ties the hands of an operator to a money losing arrangement. They have a max day use fee and require 25% of gross revenues to be reinvested back into the facility. Add the City's "take" and your working for free.

Re: Lake Barrett

IMO, The new Boss is a dickwad if he closes the recreation end of the city lakes program. They have totally mismanaged the program. Keep the city in charge and get rid of the high priced Recreation/park people.

Jim Brown worked his ass off trying to make it the best program in the state and I think he did a great job! We figured that it would go to shit once he left.

If you don't take what you need with you it's not that far to the closest store. They don't need concessions.

Bill's going to retire soon. Laurie will prolly take over as the Dam boss. They will still need people at the lakes. They do more than handle fishing/hunting programs.

We offered to help out with the duck hunting program to keep it going but we got shot down. They would let us go in after the season to clean-up after the season was over. Too bad they wouldn't consider the local bass clubs and hunting clubs help with volunteers.

That's what made this whole thing go down the drain. Little did we know that when Parks and Rec. took over the lakes, they were transferring people over that made $80K-$100K a year to do what...rent boats and sell tackle?

Every private concessionaire that has done due diligence on this has declined. There's just no way to make money (let alone break even) with the current restrictions.

Re: Lake Barrett

It better get "uncomplicated" for you because soon the only fishing you will do is outside SD County. The timeline is middle of next year the Water department will be out of the recreation business. NO lakes will be open if they cant find a solution. But maybe gas prices will drop if all those wakeboarders have no place to go.

Re: Lake Barrett

It's not complicared. Let somebody come in and run the entire program for a fair price.
