The Family and I are going up in late July to the Mammoth Lakes region. We have checked out a couple of campsites online Onion Valley and Grays Meadow. Has anyone been there? Is the fishing any good? Can you get em on a fly? any info would be great. Other suggestions would be good too. We tent camp and would rather not go to any of the big trailer parks but would like to catch a few on the dry flys.
Thanks

The June Lake loop has a couple nice campgrounds if you don't find anything you like in Mammoth. As long as it's not all fished out you can catch fish from pretty much any body of water up there. Smitty is looking like the man to talk to about for up there so maybe he'll chime in and give you some better info.

We used to camp at Grays Meadow its west of Independnce about 45 miles south of Bishop. The creek is about 5'-6' wide at the camp and runs very fast. Most of the fishing is for stockers with bait I have never fly fished this part of Independnce creek. If you don't get a camp site under the trees you will bake all day long (and it's hard to get a site under the trees) I would camp at Convict Lake or at Mono Village you have more waters to fish and nicer camping.

I've camped at Convict Lake several times. It's a great family place with lake and stream fishing. Really scenic too! There's also a country store there for all your needs. Just a little south is Mcgee creek a little more rustic with just stream fishing. To dense with trees to fly-fish but you can get away from the crowds at Convict. Have fun!

I've always liked the San Joaquin River for tent camping. It's out of the way, up and over on the other side. Campgrounds like Upper Soda Springs, Pumice Flat are nice. At the end of the road is Red's Meadow where they have horses available for pack trips and day rides. Take the hike to Devil's Postpile and Rainbow Falls. A couple of lakes along the way. One's a small pond on the road in called Starkweather, and on down the road is Sotcher a little bigger. Check it out.

If you want the type of camping where you are 5 miles from pavement, near a stream that possibly is not stocked due to local issues, is near - Mammoth, June Lake and such, shoot me a pm and I'll give further info. Not sure what you are looking for but I've done a ton of trips to the area in the last two years. Typically fish the Pass though. Saddlebag is just plain beatiful!

Thanks guys I appreciate the responses. Keep them coming.
The wife has a couple of questions she is the one taking the lead in this trip.
Any info on Rock creek area would be appreciated.
She also wants tree filled area so that we dont burn up.
Upper Soda springs sounds good is that accessable by car or is it a big hike.

By car if you've got camp gear and then there are some restrictions as far as driving in if you're not camping. They actually operate a shuttle, (mandatory at times) for those who are not camping. You drive all the way to the Mammoth Mountain Inn and over a pass down to the other side of the sierra crest. Very nice campgrounds along the San Joaquin River with plenty of trees.

Twin Lakes at Mammoth is a great campground. There are several spots that back up to the lake. Good fishing plus a store , resturaunt, and hot showers. Full of trees, and you might even see a bear or two. Convict is beautiful, and Silver lake on the june lake loop has a campground at the lake plus you can fish Rush creek which runs between silver and Grant lake. Very few trees at Silver. Good luck
