Re: What Jig rod for trout?

i have a 7' phenix on a laguna 500 and absolutly love it. super light setup. great if you do alot of jigging like i do. i personally dont like kencors. too heavy IMO, and i just dont like the feeling of them when jigging.

Kencor sucks. Even worse is the look on the Kencor dude face when you Zebra rod take a set and the tip looks like a rollercoaster.

"I like the 8' Phenix." Hard to go wrong here, topshelf stuff. Especially is you use it for something that actually pulls. This stuff is great in the ocean. If it is truely just for Trout, I'd get a $20 Berkley stick from SportMart.

Jig as in mini-jig? A whippy little Kencor!

Re: What Jig rod for trout?

I fish a 6'6" G Loomis GL2 4-8. Im not sure what the model number is. A lot of people will think this rod is too short or too heavy for fishing trout worms and mini jigs but its got a really nice action to it and I really like it. My rod is matched up with a Shimano Symetre 750. The rod and reel combo is pretty sweet and very light. It casts effortlessly too.

Re: What Jig rod for trout?

An ideal setup for mini-jigs/trout worms would be a Shimano Symetre 750 or Sahara 750 on a Compre 7' or 7'6" 2-8lb rod. I own a sahara and a sedona, the difference is noticable to me, but if I was buying a new setup, I'd spend the extra $$ and get the symetre. The new compres are AWESOME...played with 'em at the FH show in Long Beach and I was VERY impressed. Unfortunately they're a top shelf rod so a lot of places don't carry them but man, they are sweet. Lifetime limited warranty and they feel amazing. If I was on a budget, the Daiwa 7' tuflite 2-8lb is a pretty sweet rod and has been my rod of choice over the past 2 years. I own 4 of them....should be some indication of my success while using them. They go for about $60 while the Shimano will go about $100.....

I don't care much for the kencor or kencor knock-offs, too noodley. I haven't really looked into the Phenix rods so I can't comment. Loomis are way too pricey for me, even as someone with a resale license....

In any case...get a rod 7' or more, it makes all the difference in the world when trying to maximize your casting distance with light baits like 1/32oz jigs or trout worms.

peace,
smitty
