Originally Posted by OILAGER We used to fish Lake Matthews 30+ years ago, back when the nearest house was three miles away, sometimes we would get dropped off and tie a rag on the fence so our pick-up person would know where to wait for us, sometimes we would drive down one of the few dirt roads across from it and hide the ride behind a berm etc..
The lake was aggressively patrolled back then and if you saw any kind of light shining you knew it was time to move on. Then when Prop. 13 passed in 1979 they cut back on the patrols so it got easier to get away with it.
We would use fist-sized chunks of mackeral threaded with a large hook and 20-25lb test, leave the reel in free-spool and watch the line slowly get pulled here and there by the "little" fish until the line would take off without mercy, this is when you set the hook on the 20-40lb blue catfish that had managed to get the chunk into his mouth. For the bass we would toss poppers/Zara Spooks at the 5lb mini's that were in abundance.
The only time I was ever worried about getting caught by something/someone was when we had about 10lbs of mackeral on a warm night that a pack of 8-10 coyotes caught wind of and was heading right toward us. I was nervous enough to tie my Kabar to the end of my fishing net in case of a stand-off but my friend, who had done this hundreds of times more than I did, grabbed a pack of Black Cat firecrackers from his tackle box, lit and tossed them at the 'yotes, as they ran off about 50 yds. we grabbed our gear/fish and left the cannoli's...er...mackeral for the dogs. | Been there done that 30 + years ago also, got pounced on by dfg at about 1 am,we all scattered and i made it back to the car but the warden had already been there and he had the coil wire to prove it!NEVER park your car around the perimeter of that lake, always get dropped off!I could tell stories about the fishing but i dont think anyone would beleive it,hell i would not beleive it if i hadnt been there...

And CA laws are the part that is stupid. I am an avid fisherman of places that aren't legal not because I'm stupid either. I am always respectful and take care of wherever I do this to ensure that I don't create problems that would ruin a spot. If I was not supposed to fish there then God or man wouldn't have put fish there. My rule is if there is a no fishing sign somewhere it's an advertisement that there are fish there, or what would be the point of the sign. Oh and on getting something for nothing, wow way off, clearly you have never done this. I work 10x as hard fishing places at night that are "illegal" I'm talking miles of hiking, running (from rangers), It's a full on covert op that takes prep, skill, caution. Dismount that horse sir.
