Steve, I will be fishing there once I see some fish with at least 75% of their tails intact.

Ken, how could I not be excited about seeing Valerie and Daniela again?

I am excited and I am sure it will be the same ol' Vine, but I am expecting a slightly different vibe due to the loss of some of the Vine's employees. I have not met their replacements yet, since I didn't do any catfishing this season, and I am hoping that they will put up with me like they did.

We all need to catch some hawgs this season.

Big fish in warm water = no beuno generally. You will end up with a SARL type opener with snaggers bringing the best limits to the scale. Bring fish from 50's water down to the 70's water that socal is rocking right now puts the fish in a funk. Ill be waiting for it to cool off a bit if I hit the trout scene this year.

The vine is a great establishment and they are forced to rock big fish early on as that is what their competition is doing, but rushing the plants never works. Remember the MV opener last year. 10k lbs of trout dead and a redo for the opener.

I think you are somewhat right about being forced into the big fish stockings . They need to compete with the other put and take fisheries . Also , this could be the reason for early stockings of Steelhead, Browns, and Brookies . Also, the simple fact that Calveras Hatchery has the fish available . If you grow them , they will be stocked .

Luckily , Irvine has the advantage this year of having abnormaly high water levels all summer . Combine that with the cold temps at night up in the foothills , where the lake is located . And , the big fish might do well . The current water temp was reported at 65 degrees . Rainbow trout do quite well at that temp . I am optimistic , ofcourse . That is my job .

It is a long trout season for sure , obviously no reason to run up for the opener. Pigs will be caught all season . For those that are at the lake on Saturday , look for my aquasport center console on the water . Say hello .

My skiff is looking forward to it's annual freshwater bath , that is for sure .

Well, I have a hard time landing fish sometimes.
I backlash quite a bit, and my line often breaks when battling non-genetically altered fish.

I sense some sarcasm Capt G . . Something tells me you are not gonna catch the red eye from Osaka to hit the Vine for trout opener . You would enjoy the spring bass bite , that I am sure of .

I would do it in a heartbeat, if I could swing it.

I like fishing for trout with jerkbaits...whether it be browns from some cold ass snowy NorCal lake, or

roll call irvine opener-dsc00222.jpg
planted rainbows, with or with out tails from a SoCal lake.
I generally suck at fishing, but I once had a limit of rainbows that went 62.25 pounds for five fish, all released.

I will tell you a little story about the 'Vine.
Back before Run's first pair of Adidas, In the early 1990's I imported to America some of the first JDM jerkbaits, and sold them on my internet site in Long Beach, as well as at the Fred Hall Show.
Pre year 2000, only the tournament bass dudes would pay over ten dollars for a hardbait--the trout dudes though a six dollar Rapala was expensive.

In the early 90's, I would hit Irvine in mid winter, and since the fish had never seen baits like these, even I could catch a bunch of big fish almost every outing.

The past ten years has seen a definite increase in proficient anglers like yourselves, using some of these killer JDM baits, and the guys that know how to troll, make some unreal catches.

Hell, I just love fishing, whether it be for planted trout, ninja pond bass, or Long Range Yellowfiin.
It's all good.
Peace out.
