Hey everyone, I'm headed up to Mammoth July 14th and taking my 3 and 5 year old with me for 5 days. Was wondering what are some good spots to take the kids fishing where the action is busy enough to keep them interested. Also wondering if there are any lakes that I could hike to with my 5 year old where the hike wouldn't kill him. We are staying in town next to Mammoth creek. Would it be a good idea to dedicate at least a day and drive up to the June lake loop? Thanks for any help. Chad

you could try convict. i would head up to the june lake area and fish silver or rent a boat at gull. i bet your son would like that. i dont't know if a 5 year old would enjoy going on a hike. if you want to take your kid for a walk where he can find pine cones and throw rocks and such, take him to sherwin creek in mammoth. follow the dirt road to where you can see the creek from the road and turn right. i took my kids there and they had a good time and we got some killer pictures.
fish lake mary from shore or rent a boat, If you rent a boat go straight out from the dock and drift the shoreline to your left with powerbait and crawlers and youll catch some fish.
I would say the bridge at Benton Crossing on the Owens. Just south of the airport on 395, turn east on Benton Crossing Rd. (where the green church is). Drive east until you cross the Owens River. Park on the northside of the bridge. Underneath is a catwalk that the kids can drop their line in the water and let it drift. Best bets are salmon eggs w/splitshot sinker, powerbait, or inflated nightcrawlers.
This is where the staff at the Troutfitter told me to go when I got my son into fishing. We go back every year and still enjoy pulling fish from the spot. Here's what I could find from the last several years for some pics of the fish at the hole. Good luck. Oh, and at the campground just below the bridge, they have the best ice cream at the general store.

For your 5 year old
Mammoth creek East of Hwy395, North of the Airport. Easy stream to fish. Cut nightcrawlers (NC inflated)
Convict on the backside where the stream comes in. Hike to it from the right side of the lake as you come in. Nightcrawlers and powerbait.
For your 3 and 5 year old.
Rock Creek Lake. Follow the road on the right side of the lake through the group campground towards the back of the lake. There is a small sandy area in the back with a few trees. Nightcrawlers
Virginia lakes. Either lake with PB or NCs. Not as big a crowd.
Mary on the backside accross the bridge where the creek comes in. Not the creek that feeds Horseshoe lake.
I hope that helps. Finding places for a 3 year old to catch fish in July is tough.
Hey - want some 'Non-stop' action for the kids. Take them to Lake Crowley, rent a boat and go fish the Sacremento perch near the weed beds. They are just starting to come on and it's not uncommon to catch 20-30 per hour. Also, they are the best eating fish you can find up there (IMHO - better than trout). Bring a 5gal bucket and a good filet knife. Don't forget a good sharpening stone to keep the edge up on the knife. the perch have tough skin. Filet them suckers out, get some pancake batter add some beer, dip and fry them up . DELICIOUS....!!!!!
Also- go to the ranger station and get the info on the 'old indian caves' in Mammoth - pretty cool short walk filled with history. You might want to take them to the OBcidion Dome between Mammoth and June also. Have fun enjoy!

For some short hikes, there are some in the Mammoth Lakes area. Near Lake George, there's a short hike to Barrett Lake (1/2 mile or so one way). I think Crystal Lake is about 1.5 miles one way.
Saw a few bears up there the week before the 4th. One of them was right off of Meridian in the city - he was waiting for me to drive by so he could cross the road - to bad I didn't have the camera, I probably could've had a mugshot! He didn't look like he had any fear at all. Saw another one off of Old Mammoth Road. Lots of deer around too.
Sorry, kind of late on this topic, but from past experiences (I feel like a kid when fishing that area) the early morning bite is the best for me. One lake that produces well in the morning is Lake Ellery near the dam. It is getting very popular though, so we have been fishing there about 6:00 A.M. Good size trouts and easy to limit out. Just park your car on the dirt shoulder and a very short walk to the dam or the rocks. Be warned though, we have had an encounter with a bear a couple of years ago, so don't bring any food.
Another easy spot is Pleasant Valley Reservoir at the very northern edge of Bishop. Kind of a long hike in from the power plant side but we've always limited out very quickly there.
