lake barrett 6/14

Went to barrett for first time on sunday, did not do as well as i had expected from all the stories i have heard. over all i think our boat ended up with around 40 fish between three of us, i would guess the largest was about 3lbs. my buddy hooked a good one around 5lbs but shook the hook at the boat but saw the beasts head, damm barbless hooks. Is 40 fish normal? weak? good?... we started throwing buzz baits in the morning with only two takers, so we quickly went to what we were more comfortable with, throwing plastics in the reeds, that is where we did most of our damage. i'm goin agian on the 28th and i think i'm gonna try some new techniques. any ideas?

In the morning try a big chartreuse Willow Willow gold blade spinnerbait. Brush Hog near cover and I always had a weightless Bass Assassin for the boils.

Expect to catch less fish, but larger fish as the season at Barrett continues. My brother-in-law (with another guy) caught 200+ fish openning day this year. We went the following weekend, fished the same pattern and places, and only got 80+ fish. If you want the really incredible days at Barrett, you have to go early in the season. You have to admit that 40+ fish is still a pretty good day. I would try fishing a little deeper, try the points on the main lake. D/S Robo worms will always work. Good luck!

Ha thanks for the advice, I'm not complaining, 40 fish is more bass than i have caught on any lake. i just hear stories like yours and 200+ bass and it makes our 40 fish seem weak. we did fish from 5am-6pm, almost like a fish an hour average per person on our boat. I think next time i will stick to the deeper water... Is there any technique to getting a mid-day bite? the water seemed dead after 11am untill almost 4 or 5pm.

Morning- strong spinner bait with thinner willow leaf blades...followed by a chart. trail..

Mid-day. sha rattle trap."

afternoon- drop shot 4" xmas purple robo...

find the sweet spot in dept and work it hard.. points, ridges and dropoffs..

The bite at Barrett does die in the afternoon. You defintely need to fish deeper, try near the dam. Also, fish any shady spots you see. I guarentee you will find a fish or two. The evening topwater bite is sometimes better than the morning. I used Robos the last time I went, they pretty much hit every color I used.
