Well the Opener was a cold one but luckily the fishing was still good. There were strong winds most of the day on Crowley that kicked most of the fishermen off the lake by mid morning. The trollers that stuck around ended up doing pretty well in the afternoon in about 15 to 25 feet of water. I didn't hear too much from the float tubers but what I did hear was the fishing was slow for most of them. Trolling around Sandy point down to green banks seemed to be the best area. One of my friends fished from the weather vein down to McGee for little results in his tube. I haven't had a chance to make it out there yet, but i will be fishing it this weekend.
We fished one of the tributaries to Crowley lake opening morning. Fishing was really good and the bite seemed to really turn on around 8 in the morning. Between the 4 of us we probably landed around 100 fish. The only bad news about that was the size of the rainbows this year were pretty small compared to years passed. Most of the fish were around 14 to 15 inches. Our big trout for the day was in the 18 to 19 inche range. I only saw a handful of rainbows in the 19 to 20 inche range and nothing over that.
After we finished up the day fishing around noon the teem trout water reports gang headed over to Convict Lake to promote the new site. It seemed just about every other stringer had some nice DGF brood stock on them. The brood stoke ranged from about 3 to 8 pounds. There was no key bait or lure to hooking fish. Almost half the people I talked to though were coming from Crowley after getting blown off.
The Mammoth Lakes basin fished really well for the ice fishermen. Most people had easy limits of trout. I didn't hear about any big fish this year yet though. The guys fishing trout teasers and trout worms seemed to do the best. I talked to two guys that fished near the waterfall of twin lakes from a kayak who did really well. Most of their fish were in the 13 inche range but they did land a few 2 to 3 pounders.
Twin Lakes should be ice free withen 7 to 10 days. The lake is about 40 percent ice free right now. We are supposed to have wind all week which will keep breaking up the ice. Lake Marry and Lake Gorge has about 2 feet of ice on them and very little water showing on Marry. There should be good ice fishing up there for the next few weeks.
The Road up to the lakes basin (Lake Marry Rd.) will start being plowed on the 11th of this month. It usually take them another week or so to open up the road. I would guess that the road will be open some time around the 24th. I will keep everyone infromed on any changes to roads being opened.
Here are some pics from our gang on the creek and some pics I took of guys carrying out their brood stocks.
