Golden Trout

Are there any Golden Trout in Lee Vining Creek?? A buddy caught a trout there about a week ago and it looks like it could be a Golden but I thought it was not high enough elevation..It has the water color marks down the side and all the fins...Just wondering...

Do you have a pic?
There are golden/rainbow hybrids in lower elevation streams.
The San Joquin is one of them.

Jim,
When I lived in Mammoth for three years (98-01), the only way then to get the goldens was at 10,000 feet or higher. I don't remember exactly but Lee Vinning (and surrounding area) is like 6500 or so. Not sure about hybrids, that certainly could be a possibilty. They didn't have those up there when I was there. Randy.

More than likely it is a hybrid Rainbow, possibly a Kamloops trout but that is just a guess without a pic. Kamloops have distinct markings (light ovals) with some red in them something like a Golden, but is a hybrid Rainbow. Golden's are like you said, a high elevation trout, and are also homebodies so the chances of one making it down from 10k to 6500 are pretty slim. I've fished Lee Vinning creek many times and caught Rainbows (Kamloops included) and Browns.

concur on the hybrids. we just got back last night and i'll try and get a post and some pics up soon. First fish my son caught out of LV creek I thought the same and then was looking at a really great sierra trout pic book and thought it might be a cutthrout, but forgot to id the red under the jaw .... later caught another one and no red underneath .... darker up top than the first one, but red/pink lateral line line, black spots, oval markings (called parrs or something like that), light under .... lots of mixed fish up there ...
