Need some Lake Cachuma advice...

I am going camping at Lake Cachuma in two weeks. The wife said I could do some shore fishing. Might even try and sweet talk her in to letting me rent a boat for a few hours. Anyway, I really want to catch a smallmouth. Never have caught one before. Can somebody recommend a good area to fish from shore (and boat) to catch a smallmouth? Of course I will be fishing for largemouths too. You don't have to give away your "secret spot", just a place where I will catch some fish. Thank you in advance for any responses I get.

If you are going to be in the area during that time, let me know and maybe we can hook up.

In all the years of fishing cachuma as a kid, I only ever caught ONE smallmouth bass and he was only about 2 lbs. You are much more likely to have luck with the bucket mouths.

The big finger in the middle of the page is the area that I used to fish from shore when I was alot younger. It's only really fishable when there's alot of water in the lake. I caught my smallmouth off of one of the points on the middle east side of that finger.

There are a ton of dink sized smallies in Cachuma now and they are fairly easy to catch. If you rent a boat, jet over to Cachuma Cove and fish the secondary rocky points with a small-to-medium sized crank bait or shad rap in either a craw or shad pattern. You should have plenty of luck that way. As a secondary method, use a smoke colored grub w/ 1/8 or 3/16 oz darter head on the secondary, rocky points. These methods consistently produce at Cachuma.

From shore, I would use the grub presentation or drop-shot 4 to 6 inch Roboworms (MMIII or Red Craw work well).

Good luck!
