05/28 - Barrett Lake

Barrett Lake - You know the drill.
I took my boy Ray (GAFF HOOK) out for a birthday trip. Overall it was a great trip with plenty of fish between the 2 of us, over 40.

Conditions
Water was MURKY, 1.5ft visibility
Water is way up/A LOT of fishy areas/Warmish water
A lot of dead bluegill and bass floating (?)

We started with white Spinnerbaits and that bite was like, Bang-Bang style. They were eating the bait almost every cast. As soon as it hit the water, the fish were on it. We fished these tight to cover near tullies, trees, brush, stick ups. This bite lasted steady from 6-9A.

Ray threw the Spinnerbait throughout the day and continued to get the numbers. We also had great success with the plastics. Our #1 worm was the 8" Western Plastics Chocolate Neon Blue Vein. The fish loved them. We also threw out worm & creatures with purple (the color everyone is saying, also smaller baits), but the success rate was lower on those and we would switch back to Choco/Neon.

I got my first frogger bites also. I stuck 2 out of 7 bites. It was really cool and landed my biggest of the day on the frog.

I also threw the black/blue jig (which was my "go to" bait last year), for about 4 fish. I also broke 4" off my rod some how during a jig battle. My 2nd GUSA rod where the tip has broken off(?). Now it's a 6' 8".

Overall the morning was on fire. Then a slow but steady bite for the rest of the day. Photos are in random order. Go get a ticket!

Did the lake turnover recently?

Looks Awesome! I've only fished Barrett once, 2 years after they last opened it up this last time and had fun. Can't wait to start fishing again.

Lakes turnover in the Fall. No algae bloom. Maybe a virus. Were there spots on the dead fish and fish dying? Sutherland had one 2? Springs ago. Took about 4 months to recover. Water looks good.

The dead fish looked DEAD.
Actually they were mostly pale, bloated and floating. A few good sized bass as well. We saw 1 bass at the surface and it's face was starting to turn colorless. Also we saw 3-4 smaller dead catfish. I was thinking it might have been from deep hooking fish in the throat or gills, maybe mishandling?

Duane, I want to come fish that kelp!

Are you talking all lakes or just Barret? Lake turnover is a bi-annual event, depending on depth, temp. and other weather factors.

Lakes turnover in the Fall.
