big bear lake 8.5 trout

went to big bear over the weekend and fished fri-sun. on fri i went out by myself to go fish in the cold for some trout. when i say cold i mean it was snowing. Click the image to open in full size.
i got my line out and set my truck up to block some of the wind and snow from were i was fishing. spent about 2 hours fishing without any luck and started to give up. the guys next to me had limits on crawlers but i didnt have any. i packed up the net my other pole and all the gear. i sat in the car and waited a fer minutes. i went down to check my pole and notice i had less then 50 feet left on the spool. i picked up and started cranking on the fish. took about 10 minutes to get in on 4 pnd test. then i realized no net. i called to the guys next to me to help out they were like how big. i told them a lot bigger then your whole stringer. they tried to help net but the damn thing broke their net. they ran to my car to get my net and the fish went off again. i finally got him with my net and weighed it. brought it home and the family was stoked about dinner.

very nice for big bear lake, thats a couple lbs shy of the record there i believe. From the looks of the tail I wouldnt be suprised if that fish was a left over from the may trout classic they just had. i heard they stocked some nice trout in the 5+ range for the tourney. nice job man.

From the looks of the pink meat, it was probably a holdover from the fall tournament. Nice fish. My biggest out of BBL is a 4.0. I was up there from Friday thru Tuesday. Got a limit everyday trolling, but nothing over 16".

oh your prolly right i didnt notice the meat tilll you said something. My biggest up there is prolly in the 3lb range. what do you usually troll with up there?? I usually put on a CD 5 or 7 and catch a few everytime out. Hey have you ever fly fished Big bear lake??? ive heard that a black wooly booger on full sink or sinking tip works pretty good.

In the past I'd put out everything from Yo Zuri Pins Minnows, Walmart Minnow Plugs, Needlefish (Red Dot and Yellow Dot Frog, Bikini, etc) and 3" Fish Traps in Rainbow Trout on a leadhead with a single hook stinger threaded through the tail and tied off on the jig hook. Tried all of those briefly last weekend. Got some fish the deep diver Walmart Minnow (CD 7 size) in black/silver with a splash of purple on top of the head, but most of the time (90%) I had the jointed CD 7 Fire Tigers out. The only variable was the depth. They got bit well on the surface troll in the evenings and cloudy conditions, deeper in the morning and mid-day if the sun was out.

I'm dying to flyfish BBL. Seen tubers doing well on the fly gear, but I'm not familiar with the techniques. I've much more in tune with stream fishing techniques on the fly gear. I have a 7 wt up there with full sink and a good supply of wooly buggers, so maybe I'll give it a shot.
