Hit Poway with the usual suspects this morning...Orca, and Capt. Migra...Wildcat bailed on us to go chase the little round ball.
It was nice and cool this morning with just a hint of breeze on the water. We boated two decent fish within the first 40 minutes or so, (one on bait and one on the FT #5 Rapala). That was it for the next few hours. We trolled, and trolled, and drifted, and trolled then drifted some more. Threw everything in the box at them, and just could not get them to go.
We had just finished a drift and it was time to call it a day. Put the trollers back out and headed for the dock. As we passed another boat the guys asked if we had done any good. I turned to talk to them, and when I looked back my bait stick was horizontal to the water and leaving the boat fast. I lunged for it, and was able to grab it right at the end of the butt. I looked down and I'm looking at water. The rod had to be at least 2 feet over the water by the time I grabbed it. What a rush.
As soon as I grab hold and stop the forward, or should I say backward momentum the drag started screaming. This thing was ripping line off...a good 50 or more yards...what a sweet sound. Doesn't matter to me if it's 80#, or 4# it gets the adrenaline flowing. I have to admit I backed down on this fish to cut down on the length of the fight...didn't want it to chew through the line. She jumped completely out of the water once, (heart in throat), and got under the boat for a few tense moments but in the end Sean was able to scoop her into the net. The scale stopped at 11# initially but when all was said and done it settled in at 10lbs 4oz...10 3 on the dock scale. Trolled the rest of the way in for nada.
I think this is the same fish that was swimming around on the surface for over a week. I made reference to chasing it down and trying to scoop it in another thread, (thought it was dying). We identified her by the split in the dorsal. Don was there that day too, and asked me if I was happy now that we weren't able to scoop her a few weeks ago. I think you all know the answer to that question.
