"Rocknbones" aka Big Dan had to work today so "Fishkiller G" and I went by his house at 5am and picked up his 10 year old son "Big Jack" for a days fishing at Irvine Lake. On the way to the lake I asked the boyz if they wanted to fish the Kids Lagoon or get a boat and try of the big ones on West Shore. Boat kids gave me a "let's catch a big fish today" answer (God bless them)

.
We were set up and 6 lines in the water before 6:15am. At 6:20 "Fishkiller G" is on the board with a 1 1/2 lb rainbow. At 6:30 "Big Jack" is on the board with a 2 lb rainbow. We get about 4 short bites (pick up and spit out) over the next 15 minutes then at about 6:45 the rod right in front of me gets slammed. I set the hook on the 6ft Kencor with Shimano Sedona 750 with 2lb Maxima. The fish was big (est. 10lbs) it's running, jumping, flipping, diving, jumping, flipping............. snapping the line at about 80 yrds offshore. At which "Fishkiller G" proudly proclaims "That's my dad, he always farms fish, he'll farm every fish he hooks today, just watch him, he's horrible at fishing". Next year Santa's bringing the little turd a bag of coal for Christmas.
The bite slows down to 1 fish about every 1/2 hour when....................... at about noon "Big Jack" grabs a rod that's being toyed with by another trout... dink, dink, dink, dink,,,,,,,, whammo Jack set's the hook! There is a huge swirl in the water at only 25 ft from the shore and the 6 ft. Kencor rod doubles over and the Shimano Sedona 750's drag starts to sing. At about 40 yrds the fish blasts out of the water with crashing back flip and then peeled off another 80 yrds. Now at 120 yrds it jumps twice more and runs another 20-30 yrds. "Big Jack" finally gets her to stop at about 150-160 yrds from shore and now our fear is that a boat trolling the shoreline may be oblivious to what is happening could cruise by and saw him off. Luck was on our side and no boats came by us. Slowly the fish was getting tired out and Jack was gaining back line until she got about 15-20 ft from shore and then just swam back and forth, back and forth almost as if looking at us daring us to tighten the drag so she could give it one more blast to freedom. Enough was enough and I went in nearly waste deep and Jack guided her right into the net like a pro. Big Dan came out to the lake after work and took Jack up to the store to get a digital weight on her and after sitting in an ice chest for over 2 hours she weighed in at 9 lbs 10 oz!!!!!!!
The kid has got mad fishing skills!
His rod had a perfect bend and constant pressure the entire time.
Not once did he lose his cool and ask to adjust the drag of fidget with his gear.
Congrats Jack!, that was one hell of a nice fish and I'm glad that "Fishkiller G" and I could be there to share the moment with you.
See ya Wednesday at 5am
