Been wanting to hit Lake Poway but the opener was postponed a couple of times due to erosion issues from the last couple of rains. It opened last Wednesday but I couldn't make it. The first plant was three weeks ago, (4500pounds with 25% of that trophy fish..5# and up). Another 2500 pounds was stocked yesterday, (25% of this stocking was 5# and up also). I called Jim (aka Wildcat), last night and we were both thinking the same thing. The weather conditions were just right. Front moving in...a little rain with a light wind...alright. Meet you at the gate at 6am.
First cast of the morning produced an estimated 8# Rainbow. I say estimated because yours truly farmed it at the boat. I laughed it off but man I would have loved to net that fucker! We ended up with four more. They were 3#, 4#, 5#, and 6#. I know the one I farmed was way bigger than the 6#er that's why I feel safe in estimating 8#. Talked to a couple of other guys that were leaving with limits of 3 to 5 pounders on the way out. They got most of their fish on the anchor using the nightcrawler/power bait combo.
Off the lake a little before 10, and just a little late opening the shop this morning. You know how it is...one more cast, ok one more, ok but really just one more drift, etc...

It was hard to go with that quality of fish biting as well as they were. Sorry no pics...can't find my camera.
These are very nice fish. Nearly all the fish we saw caught were 3 plus pounders. The FT, and Rainbow #5 Rapala were working as well as the Rainbow, and Gold/Red Thomas Bouyants. We had a couple of other knockdowns but missed them, (rigging up other rods when they got bit). Most fish came while drifting and tossing the iron around with a couple of hits on the troll, (night crawler/power bait combo). Tried the water bobber/power worm combo for a while but no love there.
If you can get out there go now! They are on the chew and very nice quality. Beautiful fish, very thick, great colors, full tails, and good fighters. I think they said they are getting them from Colorado. These fish pulled hard, and all of them put on a show...even the 6 pounder. One of them even greyhounded across the surface for about 15 feet like a freaking Marlin.
Same time tomorrow Jim? This time I really need to be off the lake by 0915...ok 0930...maybe 0945 but no later than that. When I start whining about leaving, and start the one more cast thing just slap me, and point it toward the dock. What a blast! Thanks Jim...I needed the fix in case you couldn't tell.
