| Russian River sucks and Clear lake rocks
just got back from a family trip to the russian river northeast of Santa Rosa
the word was that there was a decent small mouth fishery there
and there was however very small small mouths I caught a handfull over 8 inches the guys at the tackle store said they were catching a fish every cast on small grubs, so I down size and it was wide open on 2-4 inch fish I went back and asked how many fish they catch over eight inches and they said and I quote "one in a thousand"
So after that I just watched the bay area chicks get stupid and some even naked that made the fishing better, I guess they had a better fishery before the big floods of 2003.
on the last day I got up at 4:00 am and made the drive to Clear lake
Plan was to rent a boat and try to find some fish on the frog
well Rental boats are rare and expensive in these parts, 200-300 dollars a day for a 14foot boat with a 25hp, I drove the entire 44,000 acre lake stopping at every boat rental place and tacke shop, before I gave up and did some shore fishing,
I fished from 11-2 and had 15 plus Blow ups on the black sumo frog
caught 8 all solid 2- 4 lbs
Good fishing, But the shear quantity of bass was astounding at times eight to ten fish would follow the frog
the Key to getting bit was to fish the bait very fast in open water with a short pause after a couple big hops
The lake is huge and I had blow ups on the frog every place i stopped and fished the smaller fish were chunks and the bigger fish were much thinner not like the trout fed fish here,
The moral of the story is that if you like Barret you will love clear lake
