Pleasant valley reservoir & Lower Owens River Fish Report

Hello Anglers,
Lower Owens River
water flows have stayed pretty steady this week with flows from 118cfs to 136cfs. The fishing on the wild trout section has been improving thanks to the warmer air temps in the high 60's. I guided three days on the river last week and my customers had success with double nymph rigs a 9ft 5x to six tippet with indicator and some spilt shot. We also found some pods of fish first feeding on emergers and then the adults came out big blue wing olives in size #14 and #16 this hatch only lasted about twenty minutes but we did manage to land some good fish on dry flys. The best fly for the hatch was a size #16 hackle wing blue wing olive and the cdc version these are good low profile flys that fish just can't resist when the hatch is on.
Nymph rigs: try these patterns
1. Emegers olive and gray #18-#22
2. Batis nymph olive and gray #16-#20
3. Bead head caddis olive #16
4. Bead head brassie olive #18-#20
5. Hares ear olive #18-#20
6. Pheasantails #18-#20
7. Buckskin nymph #18-#20
8. P.A. rubber worm red #18-#20
9. WD-40 gray & olive #18-#20
10. Stevie's Wonder gray & black #18-#20
Recommended nymph rig: after tying on first fly from 5x 9ft leader add some 6x tippet by tying to bend of hook. The tippet lenght should be at least 12 inches you should also add a split shot size B or BB above your first fly about 8 to 10 inches.

I Guided frank Manzano from La Cresenta ca. we went in at the power plant side walked about a mile and had frank use gulp power eggs and yellow powerbait the gulp eggs in the pink and red out fished every thing even lure fishing. Frank landed 15 fish all around the 2-2 1/2 lb. range we ended up releasing all of them. OH by the way did I mention Frank is 80years old!! I went tuna fishing with him and his son down in P.V. Mexico last november. This man pulled on many tuna over hundred pounds! Frank is truly a inspiring man, he makes me look foward to those years not regretting them. You the man frank thank you for fishing with me.
also anglers make sure you stop by the shop when your in town and say hello to Matuka my pet 8 pound rainbow trout.

The browns are beautiful there, been fishing that area annually for 15 years. Fish ALWAYS bite. The browns from the reservoir are a bonus! Havent been doing good by the five bridges area in the last three years, though.

I'll have to stop by in mid March when I come up. Bringing some fellow BDer's with me this time to pop their cherries on the Sierra's...... does that make me a guide?? Just kidding.... but deffinately looking forward to watching them hook up on some trout for the first time. Thanks for the info on the gulp eggs.... never used those up there but I'll have to pass that info on to the guys I'm goin' with. Thanks for all the great reports and info..... tight lines!!
