Lake Cuyacrapa

Fished last Saturday with my son (11), on the water by 6:30...lone pine....one rod in, bite in 2mins....kid grabs it, almost rips it's lips off...micro trout, maybe 8in's....freaking DFG plants...stayed and caught 5-6 more dinks...why do they stock this crap Death_To_ ??

Thanks to Kevan @ Noahs for the hookup on the Fenwick rod and Mitchell reel setup....sweet, never got to burn the drags up though...maybe next time

Re: Lake Cuyacrapa

Sounds like a good time a the lake with the son. Days like that can't be beat. Small fish are better than no fish. I know after the long range trip you had this year, everything must seem small to you.

Re: Lake Cuyacrapa

The stockers at Cuyamaca and Doane's Pond have ALWAYS been smaller. Always will be, something to do with the size of the impoundment in the DFG's opinion. The only way you'll ever see larger planters in that lake is if the lake pays another hatchery to stock, like the S.D. City lakes do.

There are some nicer models in that lake though. the water stays plenty cool enough year round for them to grow. My personal best out of that lake is 4.5 lbs. on a green and white rapala at the dam. Years ago, but my step-son caught a couple over 2 lbs. this year. Just right place right time right bait. It's pretty up there too, so always a nice place to go.

Re: Lake Cuyacrapa

I think most the year they get the DFG stuff and some they use Whitewater stock which is bigger....sometimes they stock scrictly bigger units....my best at that lake is also 4.5lbs, lone pine on a puffed nightcrawler....I don't mind the smaller stuff 3/4 - 1lb....but these are micro-minis are way too small....the largemouth and prolly loving it...and the lake discourages C & R....but we shuck off what we could.
