Heavy line, big hook, slab of mackeral, and a weight. Always worked good for me.

This is the time of year, that the big ones get pulled out of Irvine. Don't know of any secrets myself, but putting in the time. Good luck to ya.

chunked makerel on 5/0 to 7/0 hook
sinker above a swivel, allowing for a leader line of 5-6ft. & make sure sinker is heavy enough to keep you on the bottom during a drift.

Hey Moshie33, are you Ashraf's relative? I used to teach him Karate back at World Champ Jeff Smith's Dojo back in the day.

Fly line mack if you are shore fishing, if you rent/take a boat carolina rig with 4-6 ft leader and about 1oz slider. 1/3 of a bit mack and a big hook, 25# line, and a good drag to slow them down. As for location well I haven't fished Irvine for cats but I heard down by the damm.

That's right, flyline a piece of mack from the shoreline. It might be a pain fishing from a boat without 2 anchors (if you're not on the buoy line or sumthin) because the boat might sway back and forth and it might be hard to tell a bite. I use my bass gear for normal cats, medium heavy rod, baitcast reel, 12 lb test. I freespool my reel to let it pull out line because cats can be pretty cautious. Speaking of that, that's why i dont like to use weight unless you really have to. When it comes to lettin em pull out line and setting the hook, that just takes practice. You always miss more than you hook. Well there's my 2 cents, all the freshwater gurus are at www.sdfish.com. have fun out there.

I use mackeral and anchor up and sit up all night watching DVD's. It gets real technical when you fish with me. The cats seem to like Apocolypse Now and Hamburger Hill. Although I did get a fatty while watching Napoleon Dynamite.
