I headed up to susanville to see the girlfriends grandparents and I just had to bring my fishing poles for the one of a kind eagle lake trout. I spent the morning of christmas eve with my girl at my side fishing from the marina using worms and a bubble. Before I knew it bam==hookup and rod bent over fought it for about 20 minutes using 2 lb test and an ultra light--damn broke the line on a rock next to the shore. Guessing it was around 7-8 lbs. Re-tied and re-hooked almost immediately landed this one measured at 5 lbs. Wish I had my camera. That was the one thing that I left in San Diego before my 10 hour drive. I guess I have to wait another year before I head up there again!!!! This was my first time I have ever fished there. What a beautiful lake. Cold though!!!
Eagle Lake closes on December 31st. It opens the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. It is a very bad lake to fish light line. While I have used 4lb, I am usually rigged with 6lb, and I know others who fish 10lb. Not only are Eagle Lake trout exceptional fighters, there are too many obstacles that can cut line; hence, strong line is needed to pull fish away from rocks, etc. BTW, once you hook into one of these amazing fish, you'll never be the same.
The three things I miss most about NorCal since I moved down here are salmon fishing, steelhead fishing and flyfishing Eagle Lake. There is no better trout lake for big bruisers like Eagle Lake. They are by far the toughest rainbows and the best tasting rainbows I have ever eaten. Its a damn cold time of year to be there.

Yah getting her to go with me at first was hard, but I just told her to bring her book and it would be comfortable. Yah right, as soon as the wind picked up it was all over, she was like an icicle!!!!

10 hours is all it takes? When I was a kid went there several times...of course in the last 30 years they may have improved the roads. Use to be it took as long between Sac and Susanville(about 200 miles) as it took from San Diego to Sac(about 500 miles)
