All you need is a good 8 wt rod with a functioning reel spooled with a sinking line (I most often use a 350, or so, grain shooting head) tied to about 6 feet of 12-15 lb mono then straight into the fly of your choice and you're good to go. You can go lighter or heavier on the rod and the line. But you'll want some backbone to punch into the wind and the rig above will cover most situations you'll find in the surf here. It's really fun when you get into bat rays, halibut or sand sharks too. Have fun... you're about to discover one of the best-kept solo fishing secrets around!

Good advice!

Check out a combo rod/reel line at Bass Pro Shops/Offshore Angler. Good prices and durable reels for salt.

St. Croix Ultra 9' 8 wt and a decent saltwater reel. PM me if you are interested in a new series of reels. I just tested them in New Orleans and they are killer for the money.
