If you are not a fly tosser you can try the 'ol clear bobber and fly trick.

I use a 4lb outfit with a 4lb flouro leader. On your main line string a small clear bobber and terminate to a barrel swivel. Past the barrel swivel use a ~18" 4lb flouro leader to a size 16 or 18 dry fly (or nymph depending on season).

If you end up in the valley, there is a climbing and tackle shop in Yosemite village. There was this swedish lady that knew her sheet and was a good source for what was on the hatch. Check the local reg's because most of the valley is now C & R only.

My most productive flys were the mosquito and the royal coachman.

It took me YEARS to figure that place out. You now owe me a fish report....with pics

Good luck kiddo.

I haven't fished the valley, but I've fished many sierra streams. A good fly for me has always been the small black ant.

I have been fishing the Merced for 20 yrs. and have had amazing success on the fly. Fish below pohono bridge. I like to park in areas w/ no river access and walk towards river. You will find sections of untouched water, some never fished in a season. Prince nyphs always work and mosquito for dry. Last year I scored some nice bows in the hotest weather ever daytime high 105!
