Dropper Loop

This time of year I love fishing the big FOAM dries with the nymph dropper. This loop has been around for a long time but, I just remembered it.
I normally tie a longer piece of tippet to my leader and use the tag to tie my HOPPER on, then the longer piece (sometimes up to four feet) for a nymph or a scud, etc.
This occured to me today while I was tying some hoppers. For those of you who are not familiar. It is a piece of mono (in my case a heavier, like 10lb., flouro) tied in a loop at the back of the hook, then tie the fly as you normally would.
Now you just tie to the loop your tippet with the dropper. It leaves the Hopper hook open for bites.

Re: Dropper Loop

Nice foamer! You know me, so let me play devil's advocate with ya, Joni! Why not tie a long tag to my clinch off this fly..... seems to naturally bow the hopper nicely in front as the the nymph dropper dives the current?

Peace,

Matt

PS. A foamer and good nymph dropper was something us guides kept from ya'll long ago. This system rocks! Corkies spook fish!

Gotcha! I'm happy and I hope you're happy too!--to quote the preverbial lyric of yore. Just wondering what the advantage is with your always wicked ties!

Don't be too critical of my ties when they arrive. I'm more a fisher than a tier. Give your hubs my squeeze. Gotta get out to your neck o' the woods.

PS. When R you gonna send me your new cd?

Re: Dropper Loop

If I am reading this right you are saying to use the small loop to drop a nymph from.. and by doing this you are keeping the foam flys hook clear for a hook up if the fish bites?? so my question is this.. is that loop tied into the fly when the fly is tied... if that is the case is there a way to tie that loop on after the fact.. keeping in mind you are talking to a non tying novice on this end...
