If you are using a quality dacron or spectra backing, it can be a looooong time. I still have the same backing on a couple of reels that I bought in the late 1970s, and it still tests out about the same as when I bought it (20lbs +/-) This is Cortland Micron.

Re: How long does the line last?

Are you asking about the backing Jason? Or the fly line itself?? Typically a fly reel is loaded with backing-flyline-leader-tippet. Sometimes the word tippet and leader are used interchangeably...

Re: How long does the line last?

I'm with Drydocked. I have some very old reels and line and havce never replaced the backing. Cleaning the whole set-up at least once a year, might have something to do with that. I have a line winder and I take everything off, and submerge it in mild dish soap (to cut grease and grime) and then rinse thoroughly and dry with a towel plus lay out on a terry cloth towel for a day. Then return to reel and add line dressing to the line (Glide Dressing) even on the coated lines. I have some that are over 10 yrs old.

Re: How long does the line last?

I've got some (several thousand yards) of Harro's original Spectra backing (Bionic Braid) on several fly reels that are now almost a decade old. The pink is bleached out and the backing has seen heavy saltwater use in hot weather on 12-17 wt rods. It's still all good, as I test it every season. Loads of tuna in the 50-75 class, mucho schoolies below that, and a few larger (+ several hours on BIG fish I never got to color , + wahoo, pacific sails and dodos. It still tests well!!
