Best fly line for Alaska streams

Headed to Alaska for the first time this year in July to a place called Doc Warners for a week (it's a dry camp, I'm a jack Mormon, lord help em). My primary target species is halibut (go figure) but it seems there's a good run of pink salmon in the nearby streams.

Since I suck at flyfishing, unless perch are involved, wanted some expert advice. I have an 8 weight Sage launch with an Orvis Mach 4 reel loaded with Rio bonefish sink tip line (yes CrowleyDog, it's a virgin). Have no idea what line to use for streamer patterns in these parts. If what they say is true, the fishies can be thick so it's not terribly technical. And maybe, just maybe, I can cast well enough to wack a few.

Soooooo.....whatdoyathink?

Thanks!

Rick

PS: Maybe I'll wear the pink skirt and really mess with them. Don't fear the reaper

Re: Best fly line for Alaska streams

If you'll be fishing for the Pinks, you're not going to have any problems at all. Sink-tip or floating fly lines are perfect. I wouldn't waste an expensive fly-line for them though...anything will work. Throw on a 6-10' leader with a split-shot or two and a big streamer fly. We usually use Russian River Flies or Coho Flies. I can't see spending the money on expensive flies. If the pinks are in you shouldn't have any trouble catching a couple hundred. Bring LOTS of spare split-shot and LOTS of big flashy flies. Just a hint...a 2/0 hook with some yarn tied at the top will usually catch just as many for a whole lot less money. Sometimes we used a small corky to float it and keep from getting hung up as much but they're real easy to catch!! Enjoy and I'm jealous that you're going up there and not me! 7 Years left in the Navy and I'm heading back HOME TO ALASKA!!

Mike,

Thanks for that bro.

This appears to be within my budget and ability.

So...you go up to Alaska and you go to the nearest stream and you find the best looking fly and you say "Hey babe...you come here often?"

Hope that helps!

CD here's one for you
So...you go up to Alaska and you go to the nearest stream and you find the best looking fly and you say "would you like to see my woolly bugger".

And for Scarleg
So...you go up to Alaska and you go to the nearest stream and you find the best looking fly and you say "would you like to see my woo...hang on, it's here somewhere, nevermind, I left it at home again".

Bring it on!

Re: Best fly line for Alaska streams

OK,

So I invited a wee bit of smack from my dear friends on this post....wifey just trumped all ya'll without a word.

My fish supply has dwindled to nada lately due to limited time on the water plus I stunk it up when I got out. Earlier this week wifey bought frozen tillapia to get her fish fix. It was good.

So, I'm getting the boat ready for tomorrows halibut trip and wifey returns from the grocery store, unloads, then heads off to her folks. I look in the freezer to find this:

It would really suck if she brought home perch!
