| Mammoth open all year
got this off the Troutfitter web site,
sounds good to me. NEWS Select places in Mono County will be open year round to fishing next year! The Owens River, Hot Creek and the East Walker River will be open next year round starting next year. A lot of our guides and myself are excited to wet a line in the winter time. There will also be a ZERO LIMIT during the winter in all of those water. The plan still could be shot down but for now it has passed. hope you all have a Happy New Year see ya Greg |

I've heard some of the locals are upset that these waters will be open to fishing year round. I'm sure there are pro's and con's to both.
I wonder if they're upset because opening day might be slightly less of a draw due to the recent changes? Who knows.

The Owens below Lake Crowley has been open year round. I guess the new part would be either north or south of Bentons Crossing. This may be a way for guides in the area to keep a bit of bread on the table during the ski season. From a tourist entertainment view, how nice for the dads to have something to do while the kids are rippin the halfpipe. East Walker is not really the Mammoth area, but kinda equadistant form there and Tahoe. And yep, zero limit means no kill.

The area to be open would be from Benton Crossing to Hiway 395 up near Big Springs. One reason some locals are unhappy (including me) is that the stretch between Benton Crossing and Arcalarious Ranch is very good Waterfowl hunting from mid Nov. thru Jan. and we have fery little good waterfowling here on the east side. We don't think that it should be ruined so a few guides can make a few more bucks. There is 60+ miles of lower Owens that can be fished any time. Why take what little quality water that we have left? Fishermen roaming the banks and scaring up birds do not make a quality hunt for waterfowlers. Will it impact the spring spawn. No one really knows but 90 % of the fly fishermen are wearing waders and a good % of them don't know a Redd from a simple hole in the sand and will walk right thru the Roe clusters.....hronk

Bob, thanks for the insight. Hope a compromise is found. Foremost should be protecting the spawn. Do the guides have that great a influence to change the regulations? The ones I've talked to at the local shops were young guys that seemed to just love to fish.

To be honest, I really don't know. I do know that Tom Loe (Sierra drifters) is for it and at least one of the major Mammoth fly shops is for it. I also know that none of the locals were told of the decision before it was made, including the Bishop office of the DFG. They were notified by an outdoor writer from Western Outdoors News, a former sherriff from Mono county. They were told this one day before the proposal was adopted. You would think that we the fishing and hunting public would be given an oppurtunity to voice our approval or our concerns before a decision was made, after all, isn't the F & G supposed to be looking out for our best interests????.....hronk
