First Fly Setup

I have never fly-fished, but looking to start. I'll fish trout from streams and lakes in the Sierra as well as local. I'll fish from shore or a float tube.

At least this is what I think I'll fish.

Anyway, looking to get my first set up. I saw one on Sierra Trading Post.com.

It was an Orvis Streamline Mid Flex 2 piece, 5 wt. 8'6". Originally $89, on sale for $57

Anybody know about this rod? Is this a decent rod? Is this a good starter rod?

I'm looking for something cheap to get started. I can alwaysupgrade down the road or wrap a rod.

Keep in mind I know NOTHING about fly fishing. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: First Fly Setup

Good starter rod, if that's what you're going for. And I mean starter. If this is something you might get into, you'll outgrow the rod.

It's slow... slow even on the medium rating. But for $57, you could a lot worse. If this is a rod for a few outings and hang it all up, then go for it. If you really want to get into fly fishing, get a more versatile rod.

Just my $.02 worth.

Re: First Fly Setup

Thanks Matt. Yeah, I only fish trout maybe 5 times a year now. So I just want to try fly fishing. This sounds like my rod. Just looking for an entry level setup.

If I get into it, I'll upgrade.
