Large Mouth on the Fly

I have allways wanted to try for Large Mouth Bass on the fly gear and with the LMB top water time of year just around the corner I have a few questions

Actually only 1,

I need some suggestions on gear I got kinda lost looking through the catalogs.

I have no experience and will just be learning but don't mind buying quality gear.

Rod/Reel/Line/poppers/fly's and what ever the rest of the shit is called

Thanks
Brandon

BTW I do have a 20' bass boat that is Diamond Valley ready if anyone wants to take on a project case

You don't have to get to fancy. A 6 to 8 wt. rod, 9' or better (I prefer 8 on lakes and for the big flies) a reel capable of hadling 40 yds. of 25# dacron or the equivalent in spectra, and your double taper floating fly line if you are new to fly casting, weight forward floating line if you cast decent. You'll here a lot of opinions on leaders, length, taper etc., but for me, I've always used 8-10' of straight mono, probably 8lb. fluoro would be great. Keep it simple.

As far as flys go, I haven't done a lot of bass on the fly as of recent years, but good go tos for surface action are deer hair poppers in natural, white, white and red, olive, and black. I'm sure there are a huge variety of foar and cork body poppers with eyes and scooped heads for more pop on the surface when you pop them, follow the same color patterns, remember, they can hear it, but they have to see it too. On the surface, light day = light color, dark day = dark color.

Anyway, that's my .02 and I'd love to try and figure out DVL with ya on the fly if you don't get a better offer from these guys on here that are more experienced than I.

Good Luck on the LMB, a lot of fun on the poppers.

Rob

I flyfished large mouth bass alot when I was a kid. Any cheap flyrod and reel will work.
My favorite "fly" is the deer hair mouse. Poppers are good too. Fish late evening and after sundown on a calm night. Those fish just explode on the mouse at night.
