Fly.
Starting in 1974, when I was only ten years old, and still attending fly tying and rod wrapping classes at the Long Beach Casting Club, I began my corbina quest. Within a couple of years, I had already caught a corbina that was larger than the existing all tackle world record. I released this fish after weighting on a hand scale. This fish was caught on bait, in Long Beach. It weighted 7 1/4 pounds (the existing record in 1976 was in the 6 1/2 pound range).
I was not concerned with records, but I became interested in catching them on fly tackle (I had caught one 2 lb. corbina on fly tackle while fishing for surf perch in 1974).
There was a cool corbina fly that the late John Hochenbrocht showed me to tie, and it worked really good for both corbina and surf perch. The original ones were tie on a "scud hook" by Mustad, and had a chenille body, with a red hackle for the legs.
I wanted to tie a new version (with new materials) of the Hochenbrocht Shrimp Fly. Here it is.

The tail, and body is made from this rubber core hair band that I found at the 99 cent (100 Yen) store here in Japan. I removed the rubber tube from the core....

In lieu of the red hackle for the legs, I wrapped this new nylon yarn material around the body.

The same 'ole lead painted eyes are tied to the head, and secured with head cement. Fast. Cheap. Quick, and Easy.
