Key West early May

I'll be in Key west with my girlfriend for 4 or 5 days in early May. She doesn't fish but I definitely want to get at least a 3/4 day trip in. I've looked into options briefly online but I have no idea if I want to fish for Tuna, dolphin etc or try something else.

Any suggestions for who to fish with and what to fish for that time of year???

Thanks!

48 Views and no help!!!! C/mon guys I wanna go fishing!!!!!

Re: Key West early May

It really depends on what your looking for. The fishery is so diverse, do you want to catch a 5lb bonefish, a 40lb dodo, a 100lb tarpon, or some healthy snapper and grouper? It also depends on how much you want to put down. The big tarpon migration will be in full swing at that time and a half day guided trip should be very reasonable. You might want to make reservations with a guide soon though. The head boats usually leave something to be desired, but they are cheap. I myself will be chasing some poons and phins. Be sure to stop by Conchy Joe's tackle and they will help you out with anything you need.

I'll post an answer tomorrow. Gotta call my sister, a former Key West local....

too bad you're only going to be there for a few days. the tortugas on the yankee capts. would have been a nice fishing excursion for you.

Re: Key West early May

I'm looking for the most bang for my buck. I'd prefer dolphin, marlin, etc but if it's way cheaper and I have a decent chance of catching something, I wouldn't mind giving Tarpon a try. Cheaper the better!!!

Thanks again for all the help!

Re: Key West early May

If catching dolphin rings your bell, book ANY offshore guide in the Keys. Those are hardly in short supply. Not what most people come to the Keys to target but the chance of success is pretty high if dolphin is the main target.

Islandmorada has pretty good fishing. Bud n Mary's Marina has the best boats.

Check out the daytime/night time Swordfishing

I've been to the Keys twice in the last 3 years - my opinion is that Key West is great for touristy/nightlife things to do similar to Harbor Village with a touch of Tijuana thrown in - Islamorada is a fisherman's dream.
Both trips I used Russ Pelow of the Rusty IV charters - we caught Permit, Sea trout, Barracuda, Tarpon, + + +. He's located at Whale Harbor Marina - is a great guy around wives and kids. Check him out on the Fla-Keys.com website under Islamorada fishing.
You're goin' to love the Keys.

I've fished Tarpon there in May. We caught tarpon, sharks, HUGE rays, permit, barracuda, etc. etc.. Tuna and Dorado were way offshore, so that was not where we fished. Try Bruce Cronin or Jack Kelly's daughter. Don't fish the Senior Kelly, and pm me if you want info on that.

=D

I was just there a couple of weeks ago... didn't make it out on the water at all, but we fished from the dock in front of the house and had a lot of fun.

Two years ago when I was there I fished with Captain Nick on his boat: Manetti. He seemed to know what he was doing, and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Manetti Charters - Capt. Nick :: Hurricane Hole Marina

I've been there a few times and chartered a cruiser, and got nothing but a boat ride and an appology. Captain Nick was highly recommended to me by a guy who reports in that area for one of the big sportfishing magazines...
