I just aim the gaff toward the boat and jerk as hard repeatedly as I can knocking the fish out of the water and putting large holes in my fiberglass!!!
Really though, Timing and steady motion is everything. Sounds like most of you guys know how to do it.

I think that you are as good of a cook as you are at the gaff. Chris Randell is too nice to let you work on his boat. Your time is coming dude , The Indian will get another Jack-ass replacement and you'll never work in this town again .

When I was deck handing we would have bets on the slime sticks. You were only allowed to used the single hook gaffs. The best piece of advice I can give is, lay the gaff in the hand closest to the water (your non dominate hand) like a pool stick. Only use one hand to pull the gaff. A quick hit will work on all fish, with the exeption of sharks.

Remember to take the plastic tube off the gaff point before attempting to stick your friend's fish. Otherwise, he might laugh at you. |

One point not mentioned, as leastI didn't see it: The angler with the fish should throw his reel in free spool, with his thumb lightly on the spool in case the fish is dropped. If so just let the fish have a little line until you can have another chance to gaff the fish again.
And get a new deckhand that doesn't miss on the first shot! |

lots of good answers here....whichever method you choose to go with, you can hone your skills on a soda or beer can thrown over. stick a can consistently and you're sure to hit your target on the fish. oh yeah, tell the angler (yell if you have to) "keep the head in the water".......
