Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions for premaking some halibut trap rigs with wire leader going from a live bait hook to the trapping treble hook. Wire diameter, etc. thanks

wire leader why????
dude 20lb is enough just remember they have sharp teeth and soft mouth you have to baby them to the surface
snell a good live bait hook then like 2-3" i "think" its called a rapala i not sure or maybe perfect circle ? anyway its a knot where it leaves a little loop at the end so the treble hook can move easier

*edit* yea i almost forgot the most important thing check your leader and knots after every fish you catch the most import thing

wire leaders are TOO stiff. just use 30 or 40# mono/flouro. i use 30 personally. hali's has soft mouths so a wire tends to rip out easier, especially during the headshakes, so u need a bit of give. even use 20...depending on situations i.e. small baits, clearer water, finicky fish...etc etc. gluck..

Halibut "biting thru mono" is a myth. Their teeth are sharp but are conical or pointed in cross section and are designed for holding onto prey-not for cutting. They are also spaced apart with gaps. Next time you get a legal halibut you're going to keep do a little test by running light mono between, around, up and down it's teeth and see if you can cut the line. I've never lost a halibut to a cut line. Wire will just make it more difficult to hook one.

I think you are thinking of a perfection loop knot, that is what I use. I tie the treble with a perfection loop and then snell a live bait hook on. The length between the two hooks deends on the size of the bait. You wouldn't want to put the hooks six inches apart for a four in sardine and vice versa. This is just me, others might do it different. BTW, I wouldn't use wire either.

If you are worried about mono then 40lb floro is great for bouncing off the bottom.
