Question Question about Spectra connections

I've got quite a few Avets that I'm planning on spooling with Spectra. A few are already set up with JB Line One but not hollow-core. I have no problem with tying a Bimini for connections but I think I would like to try the Hollow-Core splice so I can have a bunch of wind-ons at the ready.

First, if I buy a bunch of Hollow-Core, is there any reason I can't tie it without using a splice? Sorry if that seems like a lame question but I just want to be sure it's usable with either knot or splice and I'm not yet familiar.

Now, regarding the splice...is a Sato type crimp necessary along with the splice or is the splice process using the needles sufficient for a suitable connection.

Last, what applications would I need a Sato type crimp?

OK, I'm done and listening!

Re: Question about Spectra connections

Thanks, I had recently looked at that thread and that sheds light on the hollow-core / knot tying question but that doesn't really answer my question about splicing. I can tie a bimini all day long. I'm trying to get the skinny on the splice itself and I didn't see any info there that pertained to that specifically.

Like a solid to hollow splice? It can be done just not like a hollow to hollow splice. Note that all spectra is "hollow" just not advertised as such not meant to be used in that application.

I seem to recall someone was saying that you could double up the "solid" and insert it into the hollow a few feet and then do a serve at the bottom. A uni-to-uni is pretty low profile and that's what I use to attach a piece of hollow to solid.

The Sato crimps can be used in lieu of a serve but might not last as long as a serve would (this is more for lighter setups and casting applications and not cow fishing).

Re: Question about Spectra connections

Hey Tim, post some specifics. What lb solid to what lb hollow to what lb mono/flouro? I've got 50lb solid to 60lb JB hollow to 25 and 20lb flouro. So far so good but it has only been tested on rat yellers and Dorado. JB glue is good but Swifty is supposed to be better. I'm burning through my JB before I open the Swifty 'cause it's kinda spendy. Coated spectra is not "supposed" to be good to splice to using the fingercuff. The coating is waxy and not good to glue to. THAT is questionable info since spectra is about the most slippery stuff around.

Clear as mud yet?

I listen to everyone but trust the info from guys like Mark. Basil is also (obviously) a good source of info. They both share and offer insite.

I've spliced the above examples up to 200lb hollow to 200lb solid (coated) PowerPro. Fingercuff is way too cool. I don't even feel it going over ceramic guides and using flouro means you can practically feel the fish's heartbeat.

If I am rambling, sorry. I'm a student here and do that.
