One thing I saw post a few times last year was " I tried to hale the boat on 72 and no one came back, so I moved in"
Keep in mind sportfishing boats, large 'ones and 6packs have one VHF on channel 16 and the other is usually on channel 18. It is never on 72.
If you want to hale a sporty, do it on 18. Once you get a reply ask to switch to another. And do not overdo it. Ask once, maybe twice and let it go if you get no reply.

I think the techniques here are great except for one pont I have different feelings about. I ALWAYS start down swell of the kelp and try and pull the fish away from the paddy. Why would you want to drift closer to where the fish can break you off? Or you can run over or have to reposition to not run over the kelp. If you start down swell you never risk running the kelp over, you move away from the kelp and lower the chances of getting broken off.

I had a co- worker out with me on his first tuna trip earlier this year and the Samurai pulled this shit on us. We're fishing a paddy at the 390, that was holding yellows and dorado, and my buddy Frank's hooked up on the bow, and notices a boat heading right for us. I'm thinking what the fuck! This cocksucker cattle boat pulls right in , backs up and shuts off our bite. I see this fat bastard of a skipper looking at us and smiling, words were exchanged and we left. I've had only a few problems with pb'ers, I figure they don't know any better, and quite a few with the cattle boats, who should know a lot better. I'm keeping a log of the cattle boats that have fucked with us this year. If I run accross any of them in the future they can kiss thier chum lines good-bye. Respect to the the professional cattle boats, and fuck you to cocksuckers that think they own the ocean. There's more of us pb'ers than there is moo-moo's.

just saw this thread again and realized it was from last year but never the less, it still makes me sick to see that Sea Dawg is even suggesting that it is ok to "fish" by going out and finding stopped boats and then coming in on them.
Its such a buzzkill when your stopped on a kelp and you see a fleet of losers circling you tring to get your attention so they can poach your find.
Don't ever come in on me if I'm stopped. Find your own fish.
The best thing about fishing offshore is that you can find fish and not see another boat all day. Thats the shit...!!!

For a newbie, can you advise what channel(s) you usually monitor to ask permission, etc?
